Saul Johnson who goalsfor Shrewton last season helped Epilepsy Research UK
For a couple of seasons now Shrewton United have participated in the Epilepsy Research Goals Scoring Challenge run by Salisbury based Chris Dunn-Veale on behalf of Epilepsy Research UK.
Chris is an ambassador for Epilepsy Research UK, and he had pledged to raise a minimum £10,000 for the charity after losing one of his friends to the condition. It is pleasing to report he reached that target back in March and he I snow looking to double it to £20,000.
Chris has raised this through running nine ultra-marathons in six months and this year he is static rowing a distance of 2020km, as well as the charity goal challenge itself. The charity goal challenge is where 20 football clubs across the South of England kindly arrange representatives that try to score as many goals as possible, and sponsored companies (arranged by Chris) donate £3.50 (basically the cost of a pint) every time a their nominated player scores a goal.
Last season Shrewton striker Saul Johnson was the player nominated, with Johnson’s 13 goals earning the charity £87.50. The previous season the club raised £75 for the charity with the money that season being based on the number of clean sheets the club maintained in Season 2018-19.
Next season Shrewton will be joined in the Goal Scoring Challenge by a second Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League side, as Cricklade Town have also agreed to take part when the new season gets under way. In addition to the money raised by their nominated goal scorer, Cricklade have also agreed that they will contribute an additional £1.50 for every goal that one of their three sides scores next season. They will also include the charity’s logo on the sleeves of the club’s shirts.
