Back at the beginning of June it was announced that Cricklade Town would join Shrewton United in supporting Chris Dunn-Veale’s Goal Scoring Challenge
on behalf of Epilepsy Research UK. Recently a third Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League Premier Division side, Purton joined this charitable initiative with Lewis Petrie joining Craig Lewis (Shrewton) and Jason Tatum (Cricklade Town) as nominated goal scorers whose goals will have additional meaning this coming season.
Your Sport Swindon recently interviewed Lewis on the background to him joining the Goal Scoring Challenge and Chris Dunn-Veale provided more insight as to how the challenge works. The two interviews can be accessed by clicking on the picture
below.
Both Lewis and Craig both scored in their most recent friendly matches, Craig with two in the 5-4 defeat to Clarendon and Lewis one in the 4-2 defeat at the hands of Shrivenham. With goals in pre-season friendlies counting towards earning the sponsorship income the challenge to see which of the three Wiltshire Senior League Premier Division strikers generates the most sponsorship money is up and running.
Last season Craig scored six goals in eleven appearances on his return to Shrewton from playing for Pewsey Vale in the Sydenhams Wessex League and was Shrewton’s top goal scoring in four of the previous five seasons, his best record in that period being 23 goals in Season 2015-16. He had also been Shrewton’s top scorer on a couple of occasions in their Western League period, with 26 goals back in Season 2009-10. This coming season Craig will also be helping manager Joe Sheldrake with the running of the Shrewton side.
Jason Tatum has scored 17 times for Cricklade Town in the past two seasons and will be looking to improve on last season’s tally of 11 goals, which included a hat-trick away at Corsham Town Reserves.
Last season Purton’s Lewis Petrie was at Shrivenham, scoring 4 goals at Step 5 in 17 Hellenic Premier Division appearances, and also scoring 2 for the Shrivenham Development side in 3 appearances for that side.
It is certainly going to add extra interest to the forthcoming season’s goal scoring charts to see which one of the three strikers from our league raises the most money for the Epilepsy charity.
