Two of the scheduled fixtures in the Premier Division of the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League went ahead this weekend with the ongoing pitch issues caused by the wet weather being once again the reason for a couple of the lost games.
In the first of the games that did go ahead Corsham Town Reserves, who started the day in third spot in the table, had the opportunity to go top of the league with a win over visitors Purton. When the two sides had met at the Red House back in September they provided an entertaining 2-2 draw with goals that day from Dan Lardner and Ryan Withers. Leading scorer Dan Lardner had failed to score in Corsham’s previous two games, but he rediscovered his goalscoring form in this return fixture with Purton when he put his side in front with a header for his 17th goal of the season. Ryan Withers had also not been on the scoresheet in Corsham’s last two games, although he had missed one and been substitute in the other. He was again substitute against Purton but came off the bench to net his 13th of the season with another header to make it 2-0 as the Corsham strike partnership took their joint tally to 30 for the season. In an entertaining game Purton were unable to find the net at the other end and Corsham ran out 2-0 winners to back top of the league, although they have played more games than the other four teams involved in the title race. They are scheduled to be back in action this coming Wednesday evening when Trowbridge Town are the visitors to the Southbank Ground. For Purton, after a tough run of fixtures, that is now six games without a win but they remain in sixth place and will hope to get back to winning ways in their remaining fixtures which are against sides below them in the table.

There was local derby action at Frome where the Collegians entertained near neighbours Trowbridge Town on the 4G pitch at Selwood Academy. Frome were looking to complete a league double over their neighbours having won 1-0 away at Trowbridge back in August. The game attracted a sizeable attendance for the level and the crowd witnessed an entertaining local derby. Max Pollock put Frome Collegians ahead with a goal in the first half, taking him to eight for the season, and the home side led 1-0 at the break. A much better second half for the visitors Trowbridge saw them get back on level terms through Mark Reynolds. Both sides then had chances to get the winner, but it remained 1-1. As a result, in their first season in the league, Frome are unbeaten against their neighbours in the two meetings and will have the local bragging rights but they were unable to claim that double. Frome remain in ninth place in the table with Trowbridge two places behind but with six games in hand on their neighbours.
With regard to the Coronavirsus situation the league continues to take advice from the Wiltshire County Football Association and the national Football Association who are issuing daily updates based on the latest government advice. This information is being directly shared with club secretaries and team managers as soon as we receive it. Midweek fixtures for next week remain on at the present moment in time.
