In a thrilling climax to the Wiltshire County League season, Pewsey Vale emerged as Division One champions after they defeated Aldbourne Park 4-3 in the final game of the season. Keith Flippance’s 80th minute goal settled the issue, completing a magnificent run in which Pewsey won eight of their last nine games. For Aldbourne Park it was a bitter disappointment as they had led the league for most of the season and were never out of the top two until the final Saturday of the season when a win for Amesbury pushed them into third place and denied them the runners-up trophy. Amesbury went into their final game against Chippenham Town Reserves with an outside chance of taking the title if they scored a hatful of goals and if Park had beaten Pewsey but in the end their 5-1 win was not enough with Pewsey winning they had to settle for second spot, surprisingly the first time all season they had been in the top two. They did lift a trophy, however, defeating Aldbourne Park 2-1 in the final of the Senior Knockout Cup which, for this season, was sponsored by Hardings. In outside cup competitions, Pewsey were unable to the double of league champions and County Cup winners, having lost 1-0 to Swindon Athletic in the final of that competition on the Tuesday night prior to their dramatic win over Aldbourne Park.
Division Two saw Pinehurst crowned champions, but Corsham Town made them work hard for the title but faltered in the final run-in allowing Pinehurst to finish four points clear of their nearest rivals. It was a good season for the Swindon club as their Reserves were also promoted.
Division Three winners Walcot led from start to finish and only defeat by Manor in their final game denied Walcot the honour of completing the whole season undefeated. Manor finished in second place some seven points clear of third placed West Swindon. It was the top two from this division who made it to the final of the league’s Hardings Junior Knockout Cup with a goal from Ivor Welfare two minutes from time giving Manor a 1-0 win over Walcot. Walcot did, however, also have some cup success beating Trowbridge & District side Hilperton 1-0 in the Wiltshire Junior Cup final.
The title fight in Division Four went the full distance where Wootton Bassett Sports, in their first season on the league, had to draw their last game against second-placed Pinehurst to win the championship. A 2-2 draw saw them home despite the efforts of Pinehurst’s and the league’s top scorer Steve Venn who scored 40 during the season. National Semiconductors, needing a win from their final game at Malmesbury to take the third promotion place, eased themselves into the Third Division with a 2-0 win.
The AGM at the conclusion of the season saw the traditional end of season awards once again take place. Pewsey Vale won the E C Mills Sportsmanship Award, A J Brewer of Calne Town won the Club Secretary’s Award and J K Lawrence was presented with the Referees’ Appreciation Award.

Two goals by Amesbury’s top scorer Dave Coker finished Aldbourne Park’s season on a new low, as Amesbury stole the Wiltshire County League Hardings Senior Cup 2-1. Aldbourne Park virtually dominated play in the first half hour. As early as the fourth minute Gary Cook beat three defenders only to see his shot blocked and Sean Prowse shot woefully wide from Jim Wright’s centre. Amesbury’s best efforts came courtesy of Aldbourne’s generosity in conceding free-kicks, one found Steve Swinger with the goal at his mercy, but he shot straight at the goalkeeper. Mick Page spoilt two glorious scoring chances at the start of the second half by being caught offside but made amends in the 53rd minute when he set up Prowse for a splendid header to give Park the opener. Amesbury drew level nine minutes later. Coker half hit a shot at goal and Pewsey inexplicably let the ball bobble underneath him. Coker almost settled the game in spectacular fashion with two overhead kicks, one hitting Park’s crossbar and the other only inches over. Finally in the 21st minute of extra time a long through ball found Coker unmarked and his second goal gave Amesbury the cup.

Walcot, already winners of the Wiltshire Junior Cup, failed to add the Wiltshire League’s Hardings Junior Cup to their collection last week when they lost 1-0 in the final at Pewsey to Salisbury team Manor. Manor won with an 88th minute goal when a long ball by Tony Truckle found Ivor Welfare to score from the edge of the area. Although Walcot enjoyed more of the possession they failed to seriously trouble the Manor goalkeeper and the Salisbury side should have extended their lead but for Geoff Burden and Tom Earle both shooting over the Walcot bar from close range. The cup was presented to the winners by Keith Williams on behalf of the sponsors, Hardings Restaurant, while the man of the match award went to Walcot’s Gary Hogg.

A single goal by Paul Mutlow settled the Wiltshire Senior Cup final between Swindon Athletic and Pewsey Vale. It was Athletic’s third cup success in the last eight seasons and though disappointed, Pewsey had the consolation of the senior league title on Saturday. The Swindon side held the initiative for long periods of the game and Pewsey had to thank central defenders Steve Wootton and Nick Offer, together with goalkeeper Dave Lewis, for keeping Athletic at bay. Offer saved his side after only seven minutes play by heading Karl Little’s hook shot off the line. Keith Flippance and Mark Hardwick both had chances for Vale, while Athletic used Mark Teesdale’s huge goal kicks to good advantage. Offer saved Pewsey again in the 38th minute clearing off the line after Clark broke clear, Lewis making an equally dramatic save from a Multlow header. Mutlow’s 79th minute winner was a beauty. Charging in from the right, he met Kenny Gill’s centre perfectly to leave Lewis well beaten.

Walcot, favourites to pick up the Junior County Cup double, grabbed the first half of they task by winning the Wiltshire Junior Cup. They defeated Hilperton 1-0 in the final at Chippenham Town with Stuart Morse providing the winner. Hilperton defended well against constant Walcot pressure with keeper Andy Carnoham making two tremendous first half saves from Gary Hogg and Neil Clark. It was not until the 77th minute that Walcot finally found a chink in Hilperton’s stout defence when Morse lobbed home from 30 yards.
