The wet weather once again played havoc with the weekends fixtures with four games being postponed without a ball being kicked. Three league games got the go ahead on Saturday but unfortunately just two went the full duration with the game at Cricklade being abandoned on 20 minutes. At Cricklade the home side had just gone in front through Jason Tatum before the game was abandoned on 20 minutes and will now need to be replayed. Credit to Cricklade for trying to get the game on as football across the county was once again hit by waterlogged pitches.
Credit also to the groundsmen at Shrewton and Marlborough for enabling the two games that did go the duration to be played. The visitors to Shrewton Recreation Ground were second in the table Corsham Town Reserves in what was one of the big clashes of the weekend at the top end of the table. First half goals from leading scorer Dan Lardner, with his ninth of the season, and Miles Littlechild had given Corsham a 2-1 lead at the break at a ground which historically has not been a happy hunting ground for the visitors, who had lost on five of their previous six visits. It remained tight in the second half but Corsham went someway to improving their record at Shrewton as they ran out 3-2 winners, Ryan Withers netting what turned out to be the winning goal, with his eighth of the season. The two Shrewton goals were scored by Saul Johnson, who moved onto nine for the season, and Charlie Utterson. The win for Corsham saw them close the gap to Wroughton at the top of the table to four points, although Corsham have played two more games than the league leaders. Shrewton remain in fourth place.
At the other end of the table two sides in much need of a win met at Marlborough. Marlborough were without a win in nine games going into their game with Malmesbury Victoria Development, whilst the visitors were without a win in three and had shipped seven and eight goals respectively in their previous two games. At half time it looked as though Marlborough would bring their torrid run to an end as they led 2-0 at the break courtesy of goals from Jake Farrell and an Aaron Presley penalty. However, in a game played in very difficult conditions, Malmesbury came back strongly in the second half to score two of their own through last season’s top scorer Gareth Jones and Jack O’Reilly to ensure a share of the points. The point for Malmesbury lifted them two places in the table to tenth spot, Marlborough remain in fourteenth place.
In other action Frome Collegians exited the Somerset Senior Cup on Friday night when they went down 3-1 in a penalty shoot out away at Radstock Town Reserves in their Third Round tie after the game had finished 3-3. On target for Frome were Ross Knapton, Max Pollock and Sonny Burbidge. .
Dan Lardner who scored for Corsham at Shrewton with his 9th of the season and Ryan Withers who hit the winner with his 8th of the season.
