During the season the league lost the services of Life Member Rod Wirdnam who resigned from the committee. Rod had served on the league as Registration Secretary from 1981 to 2014 and had latterly been the League Welfare Officer. The popular league stalwart maintained his football interest, however, by continuing to referee youth matches for the North Wilts League.
The Premier Division in Season 2016-17 was again very keenly contested. Cricklade Town set the early pace with Marlborough Town, Melksham Town, Shrewton Utd and Wroughton all in contention and leading at some point. The eventual winners were Wroughton, who took the title six points clear of Shrewton Utd, who were runners-up for the second successive season. Both sides had the better of the other at their respective home grounds but Wroughton were to lose just one more in the league, an early season defeat at home to Trowbridge Town. They went unbeaten on the road whilst Shrewton lost away at both Cricklade and Corsham Town Reserves, also losing at home to Wilts Calne Town as well as that Wroughton defeat.
The tie of Round 1 of the season’s Fountain Trophies Senior KO Cup was probably the 4-4 draw between Royal Wootton Bassett Town Res and Devizes Town Res, with the latter progressing on penalties. Melksham Town Res put 13 goals past Pewsey Vale Development whilst cup holders, Wroughton progressed to the quarter-finals with a win at Corsham. The quarter-finals saw Cricklade Town maintain their excellent start to the season with an away win at Malmesbury. Holders, Wroughton needed extra time to see off Melksham Town Res whilst Shrewton Utd progressed to the semi-final at the expense of Wilts Calne Town. Both of the semi-finals resulted in away wins. Shrewton Utd won 2-0 at Cricklade whilst Wroughton won 3-1 at Devizes Town Res. The cup final was won by Wroughton, who completed a League and Cup double by defeating Shrewton Utd 3-1 in the final thanks to goals from Shane Hibbert, James Turner and Richard Saunders, Charlie Utterson with the consolation goal for Shrewton United.
The U.18’s Youth Floodlight teams were again split into North and South Divisions, each with six Clubs. The North Division was hit with the unfortunate loss of two Clubs at the start of the season, which necessitated a re-shuffle of the constitution. The North Division managed to complete their fixtures without too many problems and Chippenham Town were crowned winners, undefeated and 3 points ahead of defending Champions, Melksham Town. The situation worsened in the South Division with a loss of a club early in the New Year, reducing that division to just four clubs. However, they were still unable to complete their fixtures, which meant intended North v South play-off did not take place.
At the league AGM the end of season awards saw Maureen Harnett of Shrewton United win the Club Secretary’s Award, Pewsey Vale Development win the E C Mills Sportsmanship Award and Bill Hawkins was presented with the Referees’ Appreciation Award.

As reported by the Swindon Advertiser:
Wroughton were able to wrap up a first league and cup double in the club’s history with a 3-1 win over Shrewton United in the Fountain Knockout Cup. Mark Love’s troops had already sealed the Wiltshire League Premier Division last month, but finished the year on a bigger high following their cup final win. Shrewton finished six points behind Wroughton in second-place, but despite this they took an early lead within the first two minutes of the game. Mark Love’s side were able to steady themselves and drew level in the 15th minute of the contest when James Turner slotted home from nine yards. The teams went into the break level, but it was the champions who would land the next telling blow when Rickie Saunders put his team ahead for the first time. Both teams were then reduced to 10 men after an altercation between the two sides, Dan Cole was the man who saw his afternoon cut short for Wroughton. This was not to disrupt the troops too much as Shane Hibbert wrapped up the win in the 86th minute with his 30th goal in 17 games.
“It wasn’t a good start to be fair, but then we managed to consolidate and get ourselves back on the front foot,” said assistant manager Paul Bowden.
“We were slightly the better side but then it was more even in the second half.
"After going 2-1 up our goalkeeper pulled off some great saves to go 2-1 up, but then we sat back a bit and they pushed more forward.
“It was never a dirty game but there was a bit of a skirmish and the linesmen saw two of the players putting their heads together.''
Assistant manager Bowden admits it was a special day for the club and the management team, who grew up in the village.
“It’s been a memorable season and the players have deserved what they have got,” he added.
“With all of the management and some of the players coming from Wroughton, it was a great day for the club.
“I’ve been surprised with how well the team have done because we had to bring some people in, it is just unfortunate we can’t go to a higher step.
"We are all ready to go again next season and be competitive.”
