There were no upsets in the Wiltshire Senior Cup ties played last night as the two sides from the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League both exited the county cup competition. For Ludgershall Sports it was something of a painful evening against promotion seeking Sydenhams Wessex League side Bemerton Heath Harlequins. Trailing 8-0 at the break they conceded a further 11 goals in the second half to go down 19-0 on the night against the Step 6 side. Chief tormenter was George Hallahan who helped himself to five goals. Ludgershall will look to pick themselves up when they return to league action on Saturday, when frome Collegians are the visitors to Astor Crescent.
Holt FC also had Step 6 opposition in their Second Round tie, with Uhlsport Hellenic League Division One West league leaders Malmesbury Victoria the visitors to the Westbury Park Engineering Stadium. Although Holt also went down they made their higher league opponents work really hard for their win. Ryan Bole put Holt in front in the first half, and they held that one goal advantage at the break. Joe Williamson eventually got Malmesbury back into the game with an equaliser after the break before Leigh Brown then put the Hellenic League side in front for the first time in the game. A third Malmesbury goal from Joe Tranter sealed it for the visitors and ensured it was the Hellenic League side who progressed through to the last eight.
It was a good night all round for the Sydenhams Wessex League, as well as Bemerton’s win over Ludgershall, there were also victories for Laverstock & Ford and Division One league leaders Downton. Downton won by the odd goal in five at home against Toolstation Western League side Warminster Town whilst Laverstock & Ford stuck six unanswered goals past Uhlsport Hellenic League side New College Swindon.
So after Tuesday nights action, at the moment there are three Sydenhams Wessex League sides and one Uhlsport Hellenic side through to the last eight. One side from the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League is guaranteed a place in that that last eight with league leaders Wroughton playing last season’s Wiltshire Junior Cup winners Stratton Juniors this coming Saturday. There is then the potential for two more sides from the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League to join them on Saturday by pulling off giant kicking acts against higher league opposition. Shrewton United are home to Western League Corsham Town, whilst Trowbridge Town host another Western League side in Devizes Town as they look to win the cup they last won as a Wiltshire League side back in Season 2003-4. Then on Monday another encounter with Western League opposition sees Cricklade Town travel away to Western league Division One league leaders Calne Town, with Cricklade looking to pull off another giant killing as Craig Kent takes his side to take on his former club.
