Pewsey drop points for the first time as
RWBT Dev & Wroughton close in on the leaders

Tyler Sheppard who scored a hat-trick for Royal Wootton Bassett Town in their 7-2 win over Ludgershall Sports.

After Saturday’s action in the Premier Division of the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League, just three sides now remain unbeaten.

Pewsey Vale continue to lead the way and they started well in their first home fixture of the season against Malmesbury Victoria Development when James Guthrie put them ahead from the penalty spot for his fourth of the season. Visitors Malmesbury went close to equalising but Pewsey goalkeeper Louie Latouche pulled off an excellent save at the feet of an onrushing Malmesbury striker. Malmesbury were not to be denied the equaliser though as a shot from distance from Connor Laidlaw was tipped onto the bar by Latouche but came back off the cross-bar and James Archer was on hand to tap in for his first of the season. Despite a flag from the linesman the goal was allowed to stand. It remained 1-1 at the break and despite the endeavours of both sides in the second half there were to be no more goals and the two sides shared the points, as Pewsey failed to win for the first time this season. They remain top but saw their lead at the top reduced because of the dropped points. Despite the excellent away point Malmesbury slipped four places in the table to 12th spot due to results elsewhere.

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development moved to within three points of Pewsey at the top and with a game in hand following a comfortable win at home against bottom side Ludgershall Sports to maintain their unbeaten record. Leading 6-1 at the break they took their foot off the gas in the second half as both sides scored a goal apiece to leave the final score at 7-2 to the home side. Tyler Sheppard led the way for Royal Wootton Bassett with a hat-trick and there were further goals for Charlie McCuish, Dale Richards, George Drewitt and Manuel Mesas.  Player manager Andy Fennell with both Ludgershall Sports goals.
Wroughton are the other side who remain unbeaten as they picked up their fourth straight win. They were made to work hard for the three points though as Shrewton United put in one of their better performances of the season. Shrewton spurned an early chance to go in front when they were awarded a penalty in the first 15 minutes. Unfortunately for them Craig Lewis saw his penalty well saved by James Rae in the Wroughton goal and his follow up shot striking the post. They were not to be denied for long though as Charlie Utterson, on his return to the side, got on the end of a ball from James Dolman to turn the ball home to make it 1-0 to Shrewton. It remained 1-0 at the break. Wroughton got back on level terms after the restart from a disputed penalty after Shrewton keeper Dave Cardus was adjudged to have fouled a Wroughton player in the box. Devan Bryan made no mistake from the penalty spot with his seventh of the season. Despite both sides creating chances it remained level until ten minutes from time when Wroughton full back Riegan Cook cut inside and fired in from outside the box for his first of the season to give Wroughton’s new player manager Anthony Packer a win in his first game in charge. Wroughton remain in third place whilst Shrewton dropped a couple of places to seventh.
Frome Collegians moved up into fourth place after picking up their third win of the season with a 2-0 home success over Devizes Town Reserves. Lee Handford put them 1-0 up with a well taken goal for his first of the season. Jake Wright then added a second for the home side with a tap in from close range for his fourth of the season to complete the second victory of the week for Frome Collegians. No doubt manager Karl Freeman was also pleased with the third clean sheet of the season.
Purton slipped to fifth place in the table as they were beaten for the first time this season, the defeat coming against near neighbours Cricklade Town who left the Redhouse with all three points following a 2-1 win in another entertaining game. On target for Cricklade were Jason Tatum, with his first of the season, and a second of the season for Will Backhouse, who was playing against his former club. Purton’ reply came courtesy of Brendan Shaw. The win lifted Cricklade three places in the table into 10th spot. The young Odd Down Reserves side have settled in well in their first season in the league and picked up their second win of the season with a 4-1 success away at Marlborough Town, never the easiest place to get a result from. Two more goals for James Noad taking him to six for the season, with one apiece for Josh Riccio and Ben Riccio. Marlborough’s consolation goal was scored by veteran Lee Curtis.

Trowbridge Town bounced back from last week’s defeat at the death against Purton with a good performance against Stratton Juniors who had won two of their three games before today. The player who did the damage for Trowbridge was Jake Sainsbury who fired a hat-trick to take him to four for the season. Stratton’s goal was scored by Lewis Taylor from a free kick. The win lifted Trowbridge three places in the table to 8th place as they move above today’s opponents who slipped down to 11th.

Two sides who have had a disappointing start to the season met at the Southbank Ground when Corsham Town Reserves hosted Melksham Town Reserves. Melksham have traditionally had the better of things in the fixture and once again they came out on top, matching the 3-2 win they secured at the Southbank last season as they continue to turn their season round after their poor start. On target for David Macey’s side were Owen Pearce, George Bendle and Rhys Talmash, the latter scoring his sixth of the season. Chay Forrester scored both of the Corsham Town Reserves goals. The win lifted Melksham three places in the table to 9th.
