Maximen hat-trick fires
Wroughton into 2nd spot

When last season was brought to a premature end Wroughton, unbeaten in the league at the time, were denied the chance of defending the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League Premier Division title they had won in Season 2018-19. They have certainly started the current season with the intention of holding on to their crown and made it five straight wins on Wednesday night with an impressive 5-1 away win at Malmesbury Victoria Development. Aaron Maximen set them on the way with a stunning goal scored with an overhead kick on 20 minutes. The same player extended the Wroughton lead on 37 minutes with a powerful bullet header from a Chris Flanagan cross and Matt Bennett made it three just before the break after he outpaced the Malmesbury defence and lobbed the keeper to give Wroughton a 3-0 interval lead. The lead became four within three minutes of the restart and once again it was that man Maximen who finished off great inter-play also involving Shane Hibbert and Devan Bryan to complete his hat-trick. Matty Bennett then added a fifth on 56 minutes as he once again got past the Malmesbury defence with his explosive pace and scored with a neat side foot finish, taking his personal total to six for the season. Wroughton failed to add to their tally in the final half hour although the hard work had been done in that opening hour. Malmesbury did however net a consolation goal, Aaron Sanghera scoring from the penalty spot for his third of the season, to make the final score 5-1 to Wroughton.

On Tuesday night Shrewton United played their seventh home game of the season, with Devizes Town Res the visitors, and they picked up their fourth victory. The win saw them move into third spot in the table although they dropped back to fourth place the following night given Wroughton’s win at Malmesbury. Shrewton were on top from the start on Tuesday night and created numerous chances but were wasteful in front of goal in the opening period until Charlie Utterson broke the deadlock with a quickfire double to put the home side 2-0 to the good. Robbie Mitchell then extended the lead further with his second of the season following some good inter-play between James Dolman and Tyler Pavey. Lee Weeks then added a fourth for the home side with a fine solo effort to make it 4-0 to Shrewton at the break. The second half saw Shrewton continue to take the game to their visitors but a tendency to overplay or not take the best option saw them fail to add to their total until substitute 18-year old Adam Burford netted on his debut to make it 5-0. Devizes Town Res then pulled one back and again it was a substitute getting on the score sheet as Liam Moffat scored Devizes’s first goal of the season, putting in the rebound after Shrewton goalkeeper Dave Cardus had saved the initial shot. There was still time for one more goal and it was again Charlie Utterson who scored, completing his hat-trick, heading home from a Conor Cutler cross to make the final score 6-1 to Shrewton.
