Midweek action in the Premier Division of the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League saw four games played on Wednesday evening. Pewsey Vale
went into their derby game against near neighbours Marlborough Town
knowing that a win would take them back top of the table but also knowing that when the two sides had met at the back end of last season a solitary goal from Jake Farrell had settled matters in Marlborough’s favour. Pewsey had also gone two games without a win after winning their opening five games. Whilst Pewsey started as favourites, in local derbies form often goes out of the window. After a promising pre-season and start to the season that had seen them defeat Cricklade, Marlborough came in the game on the back of consecutive defeats and were keen to get their season back on track. Unfortunately for them they fell behind within the first two minutes, Dan Reynolds scoring from a corner with his first of the season. Marlborough responded well to going behind and went in search of an equaliser but the closest they came was when they hit the Pewsey post. Pewsey extended their lead ten minutes before half time when former Marlborough player Craig Simmons fired in a powerful shot to make it 2-0 to the home side. James Guthrie and Ryan Thomas went close to further extending the lead, but it remained 2-0 at the break. After the restart Pewsey continued to dominate possession and create more chances but it took until the 70th minute for them to extend their lead further, Connor Marsden dispossessing a Marlborough defender and firing in to make it 3-0 to Pewsey. Jake Force-Jones added a fourth from a corner and substitute Harvey Rutherford then completed the scoring with a simple tap into complete a comprehensive 5-0 win for Pewsey over their near neighbours which saw them move above Wroughton and Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development at the top of the table.
Melksham Town Reserves
travelled to Malmesbury Victoria Development
on the back of a three game winning run but conscious of the fact that when the two sides had met on the opening day of the season Malmesbury had surprised the home side with a well deserved 3-1 win. With just ten minutes to go it looked as though they might complete the double over Melksham this season as they led 2-1 thanks to two goals from Harrison Archer, with Melksham also down to ten men with their goal scorer Rhys Talmash having been sent off after netting his eighth of the season. However, the ten-man Melksham side dug deep and late goals from Lee Fielding and Dan Sibley ensured it was the visitors who took all three points avenging that defeat earlier in the season. The win saw Melksham climb up into fourth spot in the table, their highest position so far this season. Malmesbury dropped a place in the table due to results elsewhere on the night.
Trowbridge Town
climbed up to ninth place in the table following a hard fought 2-0 away win at Corsham Town Reserves. Second half goals from Dan Cockerill and substitute Alex Pippard ensured it was Trowbridge who picked up their third win of the season, ending a two-game run of defeats. For Corsham Town Reserves, who had led the Premier Division last season when Covid-19 caused the season to be ended early, that is now three straight defeats and just one win so far this season and it does not get any easier on Saturday when league leaders Pewsey Vale are the visitors to the Southbank Ground.
The big match at the bottom end of the table saw Devizes Town Reserves
and Ludgershall Sports
both go in search of their first points of the season. When the two sides had last met back in Season 2018-19 both sides had won their respective away game but that sequence did not continue on Wednesday night as Devizes secured a comfortable 3-0 home win to register those first points of the season. Despite the win Devizes remain second from bottom.
