Vets - Melksham join Devizes at the top
& goals galore on Tuesday
Melksham Town joined VFC Devizes at the top of the table with a fifth straight win on Monday night, their latest success being a comfortable 5-1 victory over Chippenham Town Yard Dogs. It was Melksham’s potent strike force of Steve Tweddle and Charlie Griffin who once again did the damage, Tweddle scoring a hat-trick and Griffin adding one to his total to move into double figures for the season. The other Melksham goal was scored by Simon Charity. The Yard Dogs are now the only side in the Mid Wiltshire Division still looking for their first point of the season but meet the side just above them in the table Trowbridge Tigers in their next game and will be hoping to register that first point next Monday.

Corsham Town picked up their first points of the season with a 2-0 home win over Bradford Town thanks to goals from Robert Humphreys and Stuart Skinner. The win lifted Corsham Town a couple of places in the table and with games in hand over the rest of the division they will be hoping to continue the upward trend in the coming weeks.

In the late game on Monday night played on the artificial pitch at Devizes the two defences were on top as Amesbury Junior and St Andrews played out the very first 0-0 draw in the two seasons that the league has operated Veterans divisions. The point for St Andrews saw them move above Bradford Town in the table and whilst Amesbury Junior remained in third spot but are now seven points adrift of the top two sides having played one more game than both Melksham Town and VFC Devizes.

Whilst there had been a lack of goals at Devizes on Monday night it was a contrasting story on Tuesday night as Marlborough Town turned on the style against opponents Trowbridge Tigers, recapturing the form that had seen them the top Vets side last season. Two goals apiece for Craig Wall and Antony Clark plus further goals from Leigh Wells and Michael Martin and Leigh Wells secured a big 6-2 win for Marlborough over the Tigers. Trailing 4-0 at the break, Trowbridge matched their opponents in the second half, but the damage had been done in the opening 25 minutes. The win lifted Marlborough into fourth place, two points behind Amesbury Junior but with two games in hand.

There was also plenty of goals in the game in the North Wiltshire Division at New College the same night. Stratton Juniors and Royal Wootton Bassett Town both went into their match having won one and lost one of their opening two games and they remain with the identical records after they shared six goals and the points. Jamie Ashby scored twice for Stratton, with Daniel Godwin also on target for the Swindon based side, whilst the Royal Wootton Bassett Town goals came courtesy of Andy Huggins, Jeremy Newton and Steve Howse.
