clear at the top

There was a limited schedule of games in the Veteran’s Divisions in the final week before the government imposed winter break, with just two league games played in Mid Wiltshire Division and one game played in the Wiltshire County FA’ Veteran’s Cup.

VFC Devizes took sole ownership of top position in the Mid Wiltshire Division league table ahead of the break following their trip to the Southbank Ground on Monday night. Whilst Devizes went clear at the top, Corsham Town have the honour of being the first side to take points off Devizes this season following the 1-1 draw between the two sides. Adam Taylor with his first of the season was on target for Corsham Town whilst Lee Sanders netted his second of the season in replying for Devizes. The one month lockdown that has been imposed by the government means that the big scheduled match in the Mid Wiltshire Division between the two unbeaten sides at the top of the table, VFC Devizes and Melksham Town, which was scheduled for next week, will now unfortunately be delayed.

At the other end of the table the two sides who were looking for their first win of the season met at Green Lane Devizes, with Chippenham Town Yard Dogs hosting Trowbridge Tigers. The two sides between them had conceded 34 goals in the four games each had played ahead of Monday’s fixture but the two defences were on their game on Monday in what turned out to be a tight match settled by a solitary goal from the Tigers Ben Whatcott. Trowbridge keeper Ali Jewers pulled off a number of important saves to ensure that his side kept a clean sheet and secured the victory. The win lifted Trowbridge level on points with Bradford Town and Corsham Town.

In the First Round of the Wiltshire County FA’s Veteran’s Cup KMLC from the North Wiltshire Division met Bradford Town from the Mid Wiltshire Division at New College on Tuesday evening and KMLC became the first team to make it through to the last eight of the competition thanks to a 3-1 win.
