Corsham Print
Wiltshire Senior League
Veterans County Cup
1st Round
Whilst the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League divisions are on their Christmas break, teams playing in our Veteran’s Divisions were in action this week in the Wiltshire FA’s Veteran’s County Cup with three games being played. As a result, half of the First Round matches have now been completed.

On Monday night current Mid Wiltshire Division league leaders VFC Devizes were 2-0 winners over fellow Mid Wiltshire Division side Trowbridge Tigers to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. Player manager Craig Townsend scored both goals in the opening eight minutes of the game to take his total for the season to seven and his side into the last eight of the competition.

The first game played at Devizes on Tuesday night saw Royal Wootton Bassett Town meet Swindon Rovers. When the sides had met in the league back in September Wootton Bassett had won comfortably but it was a different story in the cup. Swindon Rovers leading scorer Richard Miles put them ahead on 13 minutes after being set up by Mark Simpkins. Miles then went from scorer to provider as Stuart Foulkes scored his second of the season to make it 2-0 to Swindon Rovers four minutes before the break. Foulkes then scored his second of the game a minute later to give Swindon Rovers a 3-0 half time lead. Four minutes after the restart Swindon Rovers extended their lead further with the Foulkes-Miles partnership combining again for Miles to score his second of the game and his sixth goal of the season. A shell-shocked Royal Wootton Bassett who had won the earlier league encounter 5-0 and had made the final of this competition last season pulled one back within a minute but could not add to their tally until six minutes from time as it finished 4-2 to Swindon Rovers. The two Bassett goals coming from Dan Badman and Andy Huggins.

The second game on Tuesday night saw Redhouse up against Stratton Juniors in another all-North Division match-up. The two sides had again met in the league back in September and that night Redhouse had edged a close contest by the odd goal in five. Redhouse are currently joint top of the North Wiltshire Division of the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League Veteran’s Division with a 100% winning record in their opening three league fixtures and they maintained that 100% winning record in 2020 with a 4-2 cup win over Stratton Juniors. David Rendle fired a hat-trick for Redhouse, taking him onto seven goals for the season, Nolan Paul with the other Redhouse goal as he took his personal total for the season to four. Simon Rumming and Gilson Sly with the two Stratton goals in reply.

VFC Devizes, Redhouse and Swindon Rovers join KMLC in the last eight with four remaining ties left outstanding to complete the quarter final line-up with at least three more representatives from the Mid Wiltshire Division guaranteed from those games.
