Pewsey Win Big One To Go Top,
First Win of the Season for Purton

Pewsey's man of the match who also scored in their 3-1 win at Royal Wootton Bassett Town Dev, Ryan Banks

This weekend saw the top two in the Premier Division of the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League do battle at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground as league leaders Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development hosted second in the table Pewsey Vale. All that separated the two sides ahead of the game was goal difference although Pewsey had played one more game. Royal Wootton Bassett Town went into the game as the only unbeaten side in the league, but that record has now gone after Pewsey left with all three points following a 3-1 win. The home side started well and created a couple of early chances and eventually went in front from the penalty spot. Despite missing two penalties last week Tyler Sheppard retained the responsibility and put the spot kick away for his tenth goal of the season. Visitors Pewsey Vale then grew into the game and were soon back on level terms, Ryan Banks scoring after the home defence failed to clear a corner. Pewsey then went in front,  leading scorer Harry Hoareau nipping in to beat keeper Simon Notman to make it 2-1 to the visitors at half time. Pewsey controlled play for the majority of the second half and went further ahead midway through the half after keeper Notman fouled Pewsey’s man of the match Ryan Banks in the box and James Guthrie put the resulting penalty away to make it 3-1 to the visitors. In a game that saw numerous yellow cards for both sides the game then saw a red one when Royal Wootton Bassett Town’s George Drewitt was sent off ending any chance of a comeback. Pewsey comfortably saw out the closing stages to end the last unbeaten record in the division and replace their opponents at the top of the table. Commentating after the game Pewsey manager Alistair Tutlle said,

“I was proud of the lads today; we made a good statement but there is a long way to go though. We are not even halfway through the season yet, I will take the three points and enjoy my beer tonight.”

Whilst Pewsey were moving top of the table, the other big news story of the day was a first win of the season for Purton who were away to Devizes Town Reserves. Devizes were under new management this weekend with Jason Muir having replaced Tom Bull in midweek After taking some heavy beatings this season, which had seen them conceding 64 goals in just nine games, there would have been celebrations in the Red House tonight after Purton secured a 3-1 win at Nursteed Road. Purton went 1-0 down to a goal from Fraser Blake but Chris Avery, playing only his second game of the season, had his side back on level terms by the break. Avery then put Purton in front for the first time after the interval and new signing Bonsa Teshome then made certain of the points with Purton’s third on his debut. Congratulations to Purton on turning things around after some of those heavy defeats and all teams in the division have now won at least one game this season.

Back at the other end of the table Calne Town Reserves were looking to stay in touch with the top two when they made their first ever visit to Frome Collegians. When the two sides had met earlier in the season at Bremhill View Calne were comfortable 4-0 winners and were looking to complete a league double over their Somerset based opponents to keep their title challenge on track. However, Frome went into the game in good form having won their previous three games and a closer game was expected this time round and so it proved with the two sides sharing four goals and the points. Frome twice went ahead in the game through Barry Sandquest and then Pete Weston after Calne had restored parity after the initial Frome goal. Calne equalised for a second time and pushed for a winner. At times Frome rode their luck with Calne creating numerous chances and there were also a couple of clearances off the line, but it finished honours even, Rory Davis and a ninth of the season from Kassa Anderson for visitors Calne. Both sides remained where they were in the table at the start of the day.

Corsham Town Development started the day in fourth place in the table and were in a good run of form, unbeaten in their previous four games. Opponents Odd Down sat 10th place in the table but travelled to Corsham on the back on an excellent 5-2 away win at Malmesbury Victoria Development in midweek. When the two sides had met at the Lew Hill Memorial Stadium at the beginning of September Corsham ran out comfortable 6-3 winners and once again Corsham got the better of the young Odd Down side who never really got going in the match as they fell to their first defeat on the road this season. Jay Cant put the home side ahead on 37 minutes on his debut with a long range effort and a second from Tyler Smith 18 minutes from time ensured it was Corsham who took all three points as they extended that unbeaten run as they moved level on points with Calne Town Reserves.
Trowbridge Town were looking to climb a couple of places in the table with the sides immediately above them inactive this weekend when they travelled into Swindon to play a Stratton Juniors side who were playing their second game under new manager Neil Lee. Whilst Stratton had lost 4-0 in the end last Saturday they pushed league leaders Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development all the way until the final ten minutes and were hoping to build on that performance against an in-form Trowbridge side. There was to be no first win for manager Lee though as goals from Jordan Pinder, an eighth of the season from player-manager Jamie Jordan and another from Scott Baker secured a 3-0 win for Trowbridge who duly moved up to sixth spot in the table ahead of next week’s trip to another in-form side Salisbury Development.

Melksham Town Reserves are having something of a disappointing season by their own high standards and went into their game with Ludgershall Sports having won just one of their previous seven games, losing all of their previous three. Ludgershall have also been having a tough time and went into the game with just the one win so far this season but had been showing signs of improvement in recent weeks. Today's game at Astor Crescent saw Ludgershall go in front early on, but an own goal put Melksham back on level terms and then further goals from Jake Farrell and Tom Mack saw Melksham lead 3-1 at the break. Melksham totally dominated the second half and further goals from Cameron Pearce, Will Backhouse, Tom Tanner, Tom Arliss and Matt Caslin saw Melksham run out 8-2 winners, eight goals and eight different scorers for the visitors. Both Ludgershall Sports goals were scored by Ryan Morrison. During that second half Melksham had six players under 18 on the field, including two 16 year old's Theo Black and Leighton Paradise who made impressive senior debuts for the club.
After a tough run of fixtures against sides at the top end of the table that had seen Marlborough Town lose their last four they were hoping that they could return to winning ways against other sides at the other end of the table this week and next Saturday. However, whilst Wroughton sat just above Marlborough in the league table they went into the game in great form having won all of their previous four games including an impressive 4-0 win over Shrewton United last Saturday. That impressive run by Ben Jarrett and Craig Jones side continued as they secured a 3-1 away win. Scott Stone put Wroughton ahead, but Marlborough got themselves back on level terms through Ben Crame only for Ollie While to restore Wroughton’s lead before half time with his first goal of the season. It remained just the one goal in it until 20 minutes from time when Ash Andrews made sure of the points with a third Wroughton goal. Both sides remained where they were in the table at the start of the day but Wroughton moved level on points with the two sides above them in the table, Odd Down Reserves and Melksham Town Reserves.
