Gallant Efforts From Trowbridge Town & Wroughton
The midweek action involving teams from the Premier Division of the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League this week was all about the quarter finals of the prestigious Wiltshire Senior Cup, the Wiltshire FA’s oldest cup competition. With Marlborough Town already through to the semi final having received a bye in the quarter final, Tuesday night saw both Trowbridge Town and Wroughton looking to join them in the last four, although both were away to Step 6 opposition.

Trowbridge Town had already caused an upset in the First Round of the competition, goals from Ryan Baggs and Jordan Gullis having seen them defeat Western League side Warminster Town. Their Step 6 opponents on Tuesday night were Wessex League side Bemerton Heath Harlequins who currently sit second in the Wessex League Division One table with eleven wins and two draws from their opening 15 league games. It was always going to be a tough task for Trowbridge, made harder by the fact they went into the game without a recognised goalkeeper and with influential player-manager Jamie Jordan unavailable due to illness. Despite the pre-match setbacks Trowbridge gave a good account of themselves on the night. Home side Bemerton went ahead on 15 minutes when Cameron Roach’s cross from the edge of the box was headed in by Justin Bennett. Bemerton went close to extending their lead when a volley from Roach came back off the underside of the bar, but it wasn’t one way traffic and Josh Howlett twice went close for Trowbridge. The home side did eventually extend their lead on the half hour mark when a cross come shot from Charlie Burden nestled in the top corner of the net to make it 2-0 to Bemerton. Trowbridge got themselves back in the game five minutes before half time, Mark Robinson taking advantage of a defensive mix up to reduce the arrears just before the half time break with his seventh goal of the season. Second half saw Justin Bennett restore Bemerton’s two goal advantage with his second of the game on 55 minutes, Bennett firing in from close range. Once again Trowbridge came back at the home side and reduced the lead back down to the one goal five minutes later, Scott Baker scoring for the third consecutive game. Trowbridge pushed for an equaliser, but Bemerton restored their two-goal advantage 15 minutes from time when Bennett completed his hat-trick and that was to be the end of the scoring as Bemerton ran out 4-2 winners. Whilst suffering defeat Trowbridge gave a good account of themselves and can be proud of their efforts in this season’s competition.

The other side from the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League in action in the Senior Cup this week were Wroughton who travelled to the Flying Monk Ground to take on Malmesbury Victoria. Their last visit to Malmesbury in midweek was at the beginning of September when they were well beaten by Malmesbury’s Development side, Wroughton losing 7-0 that night. Whilst based on that result alone you would have thought Wroughton stood no chance in the Wiltshire Senior Cup against Malmesbury’s first team, the side under Ben Jarrett and Craig Jones have made a massive improvement in recent weeks and prior to Saturday’s narrow defeat to league leaders Pewsey Vale had gone seven games unbeaten and were determined to give Malmesbury a tough game. They certainly did that on Tuesday night.  In a tight first half the game remained without a goal until five minutes before the break when Harrison Archer scored to put the Hellenic League side ahead. The second half continued to see Wroughton matching their higher-level opponents and whilst chances were created at both ends that solitary goal from Archer in the first half was all that separated the two sides at the end of ninety minutes. A gallant effort from Wroughton against the Step 6 side which will no doubt give increased confidence to the Wroughton side ahead of Saturday’s home game against Calne Town Reserves.

After Tuesday night’s action it is just Marlborough Town who are left to fly the flag for the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League, and it will be either Devizes Town or Downton who join them, Bemerton Heath Harlequins and Malmesbury Victoria in the semi-finals..
