Pewsey Defeat Trowbridge,
RWBT Dev Go Second

Action from Royal Wootton Bassett Town Dev's 4-0 win over Shrewton United

This weekend’s action in the Premier Division of the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League got underway on Friday night at the Flying Monk Ground in Malmesbury where Malmesbury’s Development side were involved in a goal fest against Melksham Town Reserves. Melksham started well and went in front on 15 minutes through Lenny Gale. Four minutes later Tom Arliss extended the visitors lead and it looked like Melksham might run away with things. Malmesbury had other ideas though, as James Archer pulled one back on 25 minutes after being set up by Joe Tranter. Five minutes before the break Malmesbury were back on level terms as Tranter went from provider to scorer, firing home after a goalmouth scramble. It got even better for home side Malmesbury on the stroke of half time, Callum Hall notching his second of the season after an error from the visitor’s keeper to make it 3-2 to Malmesbury. Whilst Malmesbury went into the break with the momentum going their way it was a different story after the restart. Tom Arliss, with his second of the game on 51 minutes brought Melksham back level and Melksham went back in front on the hour mark, Lenny Gale also getting his second of the game. It remained just the one goal in it until stoppage time at the end of the game when late goals from Joe English and Sam Dowell gave the score a somewhat flattering look as Melksham ran out 6-3 winners. Both teams remained where they were at the start of the night, but Melksham moved to within two points of Malmesbury who remained in 7th place.
The top game of the weekend was the following day when an in-form Trowbridge Town were league leaders Pewsey Vale’s visitors at the Recreation Ground. After going nine games unbeaten, fourth placed Trowbridge Town lost in midweek but pushed Step 6 side Bemerton Heath Harlequins all the way in the Wiltshire Senior Cup, whilst Pewsey Vale went into the game unbeaten in their last six games, winning all of their previous five. When the two sides met at Woodmarsh at the beginning of October Pewsey threw away a 4-1 lead as the sides shared eight goals and the points. In the return fixture this weekend a first half performance which manager Alistair Tuttle described as the “best performance for a couple of seasons” saw Pewsey lead 2-0 at the break and it could have been more after an impressive first forty-five. With Harry Hoareau available due to Kidlington being without a game, Pewsey were able to field a forward line including their leading scored and his replacement Harvey Flippance, and with James Guthrie and Ryan Banks pulling the strings in midfield Pewsey could have been further ahead at the break. The two strikers combined well in that first half with Flippance setting up Hoareau for both Pewsey goals.  Trowbridge came more into the game in the second half but were unable to find that elusive goal as Pewsey kept another clean sheet to record their 15th league win of the season. Despite the defeat Trowbridge remained in fourth spot due to results elsewhere.

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development have been kicking their heels for a couple of weeks due to postponements through no fault of their own but returned to action at the Gerard Buxton Ground when Shrewton United were the visitors. Shrewton welcomed back leading scorer Charlie Utterson and with Christian Boothe looking lively up front it was a tight affair during the opening half an hour. The better chances were falling to the home side with Matt Bennett being involved in most of those and it was no surprise when it was he who broke the deadlock with a fine individual goal, cutting in from the right he beat three Shrewton defenders to fire into the net to make it 1-0 to Royal Wootton Bassett Town. Just as it looked like that would be the only difference between the sides going into the break Bennett went from scorer to provider as his cross to the far post found Dale Richards who controlled the ball and then fired in a powerful shot into the roof of the net for 2-0. There was still chance for Richards to go close again, his header from another Bennett cross coming back off the post and it remained 2-0 at the break. Shrewton grew into the game second half and went in search of a goal to claw themselves back into the game. Playing some neat football, they created a number of chances with Christian Boothe going close on a couple of occasions. The game was eventually put beyond them though fifteen minutes from time when a mishit shot from Richards went straight to Bennett on the edge of the box and he fired in a low shot for 3-0 and his second of the game. Bennett then rounded off a fine afternoon’s work when he got on the end of a pinpoint cross from youngster Alex Stephenson to head home a fourth to complete his hat-trick. The win for Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development saw them move back second in the table.

Corsham Town Development slipped down to third spot when their game away at Stratton Juniors had to be abandoned due to a serious arm injury to Stratton player Tyler Johnson who was making his Stratton debut. We understand from manager Neil Lee that his player is now out of hospital but is expected to be unable to play again for the rest of the season and all at the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League wish him a speedy recovery.
Odd Down Reserves and Purton met for the very first time in a Wiltshire Senior League fixture and it was visitors Odd Down who had an enjoyable afternoon scoring seven unanswered goals against struggling Purton. Charlie Saunders scored twice taking his total for the season to seven, James Payton also bagged a brace, and further goals from Marley Carpenter, Harvey Kendrick and Brad Evans completed the scoring in the 7-0 win. The win saw Odd Down open up a four-point gap over Marlborough Town who were the side without a game this afternoon.
Fifth placed Salisbury FC Development were looking to stay in touch with the top four sides when they made their first ever visit to Frome Collegians. Frome are another side who in recent weeks have been frustrated by postponed games and certainly took their frustration out on their visitors in the first half as goals from Dean Caslake and Ross Knapton saw them leading 2-0 at the break against an in-form Salisbury side. Despite creating a number of chances after the break Salisbury were unable to breach the resolute Frome defence and fell to their fifth defeat of the season. Frome remain in tenth spot but have games in hand over all the teams above them in the table.
Wroughton had gone close both last Saturday against league leaders Pewsey Vale and also in midweek against Step 6 side Malmesbury Victoria in the Wiltshire Senior Cup. Their opponents today were Calne Town Reserves who had beaten them 1-0 back in August. In another tight contest, Wroughton kicked into gear in the second half and took the lead just after the hour mark from the penalty spot, Ollie While putting away the spot kick for his second of the season. Both sides had further chances and young Wroughton keeper Elliot Clack, who was having an excellent game, denied Calne on a couple of occasions when it looked like they might get back on level terms. Joint manager Ben Jarrett was delighted with his sides second half showing in particular and after being on the wrong end of a couple of close games recently, noted that the win was fully deserved.

The final game of the weekend saw two struggling sides Ludgershall Sports and Devizes Town Reserves meet at Astor Crescent. Both sides went into the game with just the one win this season but both would have been seeing this game as one that could be the start of a change in fortune. Devizes solitary win had come in the home game with Ludgershall, Devizes winning that first fixture between the sides 7-1. However, Ludgershall avenged that earlier defeat to register their second win of the season, goals from Jack Cracknell and Carlos Peers securing a 2-0 win that lifted Ludgershall above their opponents in the table.
