After the midweek action in the Premier Division of the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League four teams sit top of the table with a maximum six points from their opening two games.

On Tuesday night Devizes Town kept a clean sheet for second consecutive game as they ran out 3-0 winners at home against Marlborough Town thanks to goals from Derek Wheeler and Billy Gleed, both scoring for the second game running, and a further strike from Kieron Gleed. The game was played in front of a bumper crowd of 120 and Devizes have certainly got off to flying start with six points from their opening two games as they attempt to bounce back to Step 6 at this first attempt. Next up for Devizes is what looks to be their trickiest fixture so far when unbeaten Wroughton visit Nursteed Road on Saturday.
Wroughton, following their 4-4 draw with Salisbury on Saturday, warmed up for Saturday’s encounter with Devizes with a comfortable 4-0 win over Stratton Juniors at Merton Fields on Tuesday night. Star of the show for Wroughton for the second game running was striker Jonathan Peachey-Score who fired his second hat-trick of the season in the space of just four days. Last season Peachey-Score had been a teammate of Jonny Devoille at Hellenic League Premier Division side Shrivenham and it was Devoille, who has followed Peachey-Score to Wroughton, who scored the other goal in their win over Stratton. For Stratton that is now two consecutive 4-0 defeats, and they will look to register their first goal and first points when they host Odd Down Development on Saturday.

Joining Devizes Town at the top of the table on Tuesday night were Kintbury Rangers but they were made to work hard for all three points by the young Salisbury Development side. Goals from Charlie Allsop and Theo Pennicot-Bowen saw Kintbury lead 2-1 at the break, Jayden Goodall scoring for the second game running for Salisbury. Kintbury stepped it up in the second half and further goals from Luke Conner and Will Freer made certain of the points as it finished 4-1. Salisbury were in the game for long periods and could well have scored more than the one goal but for a fine goalkeeping performance from Kintbury’s Kyle Clough. Next up for Kintbury is a tough looking fixture away to Frome Collegians, whilst Salisbury host Blunsdon.

The final game on Tuesday night saw Blunsdon play their first home game of the season at Sutton Park following their promotion to the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League from the Swindon & District League, with last season’s champions Royal Wootton Bassett Town Dev the visitors. The heavy rain on the night resulted in a slick pitch which suited both sides and led to an entertaining game. Blunsdon went close to taking the lead early on when a free kick from distance from Eliot Wheatley was well saved by Elliot Clack in the visitors’ goal, the keeper stopping the first shot and then clearing the rebound before a Blunsdon player could pounce.  Whilst Blunsdon saw a lot of the ball in the first half it was the visitors Royal Wootton Bassett who broke the deadlock, Bruno Martins scoring midway through the half with a curling shot from the edge of the box through a body of players, which went into the net off the far post. Blunsdon got themselves back level on the stroke of half-time, last season’s leading scorer Eliot Wheatley firing in a stunning strike to make it 1-1 at the break. Blunsdon came out for the second half looking like a team intent on getting that first win at the higher level, creating a number of good chances but were denied by Clack on several occasions, the keeper was certainly having a great game for the visitors. There was to be a winner for the home side though, substitute Jamie Pidgeon getting on the end of a free-kick from Harry Hillerby to head his side in front. That was to be the end of the night’s scoring as Blunsdon recorded that first win in the Premier Division and remain unbeaten after their opening two games.

The scheduled game at Pewsey Recreation Ground, where Shrewton United were set to be the visitors, was unfortunately postponed due to extensive surface water sitting on the pitch after the heavy downpour during the day.

Two more sides made it two wins from their opening two games in the Premier Division on Wednesday night. Trowbridge Town were involved in an incident packed game at Malmesbury Vics’ Flying Monk Ground. Trowbridge went into the fixture on the back of a 13-game unbeaten run in the league stretching back to January last season but were aware that they had failed to win in any of their last four visits to the Flying Monk. Trowbridge had won handsomely on Saturday, but it was a much tighter affair in their second game of the season. They went in front just before the half hour mark through a superbly struck free kick from Jordan Pinder. However, home side Malmesbury Vics Dev were back on level terms within five minutes, Ciaran Lyon following up a free kick into the box to head home for 1-1. Malmesbury then went in front just before half time, Aaron Sanghera getting on the end of a cross from Joe Tranter to make it 2-1 to Malmesbury and it looked like that lack of victories for Trowbridge at the Malmesbury ground might continue. However, Trowbridge came out for the second half eager to get themselves back into the game and they did not have to wait long, player-manager Jamie Jordan scoring his first goal of the campaign to make it 2-2 within seven minutes of the restart. They finally went back in front 20 minutes from time thanks to a third goal of the season from George Bendle. Malmesbury’s cause was not helped by then having Jake Fortune sent off ten minutes from time for a second yellow card. It then got even worse for the home side three minutes from time when Gareth Jones also saw red and the resulting penalty was put away by the league’s top scorer last season, Scott Baker to make the final score 4-2 to Trowbridge.  Trowbridge finally had a win on what had not previously been a happy hunting ground in recent seasons. Next up for Trowbridge is a home game against last season’s league winners Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development on Saturday.

The fourth side to registered six points from their opening two games were Frome Collegians who welcomed back last season’s top scorer Barry Sandquest who had missed Saturday’s 4-1 win over Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development. It didn’t take him long to get back into the scoring groove netting one of the three goals for Frome in their Somerset derby encounter with Odd Down Development. Also on target for Frome in their 3-0 win were James Hounsell from the penalty spot and Ross Knapton. Next up for Frome is their first home game of the season against Kintbury Rangers in what will be the first meeting between the two sides and with both having 100% winning records from their opening two games, one or other or both will be dropping points for the first time this season on Saturday.

Calne Town Reserves had lost heavily on Saturday at Trowbridge but immediately bounced back with an impressive 1-0 win over Melksham Town Reserves in another game played in front of a three-figure crowd, repeating the win they achieved at the Oakfield Stadium at the back end of last season. Melksham had not played on Saturday and the defeat was not the start Craig Kent would have anticipated for his side, especially as Calne Town Res were required to play for 85 minutes with just ten men on Wednesday night. The all-important winner was scored for Calne by Jordan Anning.

There was one game on Wednesday night in Division One, the game between Kintbury Rangers Development and Pewsey Vale Development, which was postponed on Saturday, having been hastily rearranged for midweek thanks to the excellent co-operation between the two clubs. In an entertaining first half, which saw both sides create numerous good chances, a solitary goal from Craig Bruce after just five minutes was all that separated the two sides at half time. Matthew Lavers added a second for Kintbury after the break, with Oscar Aspey replying for Pewsey and, despite having Macauley Sanchez sent off, Kintbury held out to complete a quickfire First team and Dev team double over Pewsey.
