Redhouse's 2-1 win over Chiseldon in the League Cup sees them still on for a possible league & cup double
Two of the four outstanding League Cup Second Round games were played this week. It was an all-North Wiltshire Division contest at the Gerard Buxton Ground on Wednesday night when last season’s North Wiltshire Division champions Redhouse
were up against Chiseldon. When the two sides had met in the league at the beginning of December it had been a tight affair settled by a solitary Sean O’Brien strike. Another close game was anticipated as Chiseldon sought to avenge that league game, one of just two league defeats so far this season. It was once again a close contest settled by a one goal margin, goals from Marc Connelly and Michael Lichota securing a 2-1 win for Redhouse, Richie Miles, the leading scorer across both Veterans’ divisions with the Chiseldon goal as he moved onto 22 for the season. Redhouse will play Corsham Town in the quarter final and for them a league and cup double remains a possibility.
The other League Cup tie played this week was on Tuesday night at Green Lane where penalties were needed to settle the cross-divisional tie between FC Calne
and Swindon Rovers
after it finished 1-1 at the end of normal time, Paul Maddox with the FC Calne goal and Tim Hughes with the Swindon Rovers effort. In the penalty shoot out it was the Swindon Rovers side who held their nerve, winning 5-4 to make it through to the last eight where they will meet the reigning Wiltshire FA County Cup holders Bradford Town in another cross-divisional tie. In fact all four of the quarter final ties see North Wiltshire Division sides up against opposition from the Mid Wiltshire Division. The other two representatives from the Mid Wiltshire Division remain unknown, with Melksham Town and Devizes Town set to meet this coming Monday and then Westbury and Chippenham Town meet in the final Second Round game a fortnight later. The full details of the League Cup competition so far is shown below:
There were two league games played in the Mid Wiltshire Division this week on Monday night. At Green Lane, two sides still very much in the title race, Devizes Town
and Corsham Town, met at Green Lane and served up five goals between them. It was Corsham who edged it by the odd goal, two more for their leading scorer Steve Tweddle who took his total for the season to 13, one behind the division’s leading scorer Phil Hampson of Westbury. The other Corsham goal came courtesy of an own goal, whilst Devizes Town’s two goals were scored by Craig Daykin and Robert Mitchell.
The other game on Monday night was at the other end of the table with Radstock Town
who were on their best run of the season away to bottom of the table Trowbridge Town Tigers. Despite their lowly position it was the Tigers who started the better and were rewarded with a goal on seven minutes, Phil Lewis with the early goal. However, despite Towbridge taking the game to Radstock they were hit by two goals before the break somewhat against the run of play, an own goal and one from Steve Jackson giving Radstock a 2-1 lead at half time. The second half saw the Tigers push for an equaliser and they went close on several occasions but couldn't find the back of the net as it finished 2-1 to Radstock who extended their unbeaten run to three games.
The game between Westbury United and Melksham Town was postponed.
There was just the one game in the North Wiltshire Division and it finished honours even between Stratton Juniors Orange
and Blunsdon, Jamie Ashby with the Stratton goal in a 1-1 draw and Lee Barrett with his fourth goal of the season for Blunsdon as the two sides shared the points.
