Royal W.Bassett Town whose win over Redhouse secured runners-up in the North Wilts Division
Four games were played this week across the two Veterans’ Divisions with two games in each division. On Monday night in the Mid Wiltshire Division, Melksham Town
returned to the top of the table with an impressive 5-0 win away at Westbury United. The goals were shared around the team with one each for Kris Beasley, Ian Dowell, Lee Morgan, Thomas Staddon and a 20th goal of the season from leading scorer Simon Charity. The game between Corsham Town and Bradford Town was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and will now be played next week. As a result, Melksham moved above Bradford Town to head the table going into the final two games in the division.
On Thursday night Corsham Town
travelled to Westbury United
and kept their own title hopes very much alive with a 3-0 win, Steve Tweddle was another player registering his 20th goal of the campaign, the other two goals coming through Daniel Beck and an own goal. The win for Corsham also saw them move above Bradford Town.
The two fixtures next week will decide the title. A win for Melksham Town on Monday against Bradford Town will confirm them as champions. A win for Bradford Town would see Bradford Town just needing to avoid defeat in their final game against Corsham to be champions. A draw will mean that whoever wins the Corsham Town v Bradford Town would be champions, whilst another draw in this second game would confirm Melksham as champions. All will be a lot clearer come 10pm Monday night.
In the North Wiltshire Division, Swindon Rovers
and Swindon Old Boys
completed their respective fixtures by drawing 1-1 at New College, Joe Anderson with Swindon Old Boys goal.
The following night was the big one which would effectively decide runners up spot. Redhouse
were three points ahead of rivals Royal Wootton Bassett Town at the start of the night and were playing their final game. With Royal Wootton Bassett Town
having a much superior goal difference and their final game scheduled to be against Blunsdon, a team they had defeated twice already during the season without conceding a goal, they knew that a win over Redhouse would effectively give them second spot. A draw would mean Redhouse would then need to rely on Blunsdon getting something out of that final game. It looked to be heading that way until a late goal from Ben Gould for Royal Wootton Bassett Town saw them take the three points by the narrowest of margins. The win for Royal Wootton Bassett Town completed a league double over last season's champions. With Blunsdon already saying they could not raise a side before Wednesday night’s fixture, they advised the league they would not be fulfilling the fixture against Royal Wootton Bassett Town, the second time they had postponed this specific fixture.
