Goals Scoring Challenge
raising money on behalf of Epilepsy Research UK
At the start of the 2020-21 season it was announced that both Cricklade Town and Purton would be joining Shrewton United in supporting Chris Dunn-Veale’s Goals Scoring Challenge raising money on behalf of Epilepsy Research UK. Shrewton had been participants in the challenge for a couple of seasons ahead of this season’s campaign.

The charity goal challenge is where football clubs across the South of England kindly arrange representatives that try to score as many goals as possible, and sponsored companies (arranged by Chris) donate £3.50 (basically the cost of a pint) every time their nominated player scores a goal. In addition, bonuses are added to the total by Chris and the clubs also have collection tins to augment the monies being raised by the charity.

The nominated scorers for the three clubs this season were Lewis Petrie (Purton), Craig Lewis (Shrewton) and Jason Tatum (Cricklade Town) and Chris has this week revealed how much money the three strikers raised for the charity before adding funds collected at the club level.

Starting with Jason Tatum, who scored four goals in games that qualified as part of the challenge, the basic total raised by Jason was £14 and his overall total (after bonus money was added) was £24.50. The total will be augmented by monies included in Cricklade’s club collection tin which Chris will collect once restrictions have been lifted. In joining the challenge Cricklade had agreed that they would contribute an additional £1.50 for every goal that one of their three sides scored during the season so expect the total to be somewhat higher when all monies are collected.

Lewis Petrie of Purton scored seven goals in games that qualified as part of the challenge. The basic total raised by Lewis was £24.50 and his overall total (after bonus money was added) was £31.50. The total will again be augmented by monies included in Purton’s club collection tin.
Finally, Shrewton United’s Craig Lewis managed eight goals in games that qualified as part of the challenge and his basic total raised was £28 and his overall total (after adding bonus money) was £45.50. Again, this total will be augmented by monies collected by Shrewton.

So, at the present moment in time the finishing order for the three Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League participants in the Goals Scoring Challenge on behalf of Epilepsy Research UK sees Shrewton United in Gold, Silver is at present with Purton and Bronze with Cricklade but it will be interesting to see if the positions remain the same once all monies are collected and sent into Chris, especially given Cricklade’s pledge at the start of the season.

Well done to all three clubs for participating in this charity fund raising activity.
