Two of the top three in the Mid Wiltshire Veterans’ Division were in action last might as Melksham Town hosted FC Calne at the InfiLED and Corsham Town hosted Trowbridge Tigers in a game switched to the Southbank Ground.
After the evenings’ entertainment had ended Melksham Town had taken over from Corsham at the top of the table on goal difference following a 7-0 win over their visitors from Calne. Former Chippenham Town striker Steve Tweddle led the way scoring four, strike partner Charlie Griffin scored one, with both the top two Melksham strikers now on 16 league goals for the season, with Griffin having scored one more than Tweddle in the County Cup to head the leading strikers’ table. The other two Melksham goals on the night were scored by Gary Horgan and Rob Cousins.
It was not such a comfortable evening for Corsham Town who had led the table on goal difference at the start of the evening. They were pushed all the way by opponents Trowbridge Tigers and there was certainly no repeat of the 7-0 score line when the sides had met earlier in the season. Corsham eventually edged it 2-1 thanks to goals from Jonathan Scott and Lee Burns to extend their winning streak to 13 games in all competitions and 15 games unbeaten. On target for the Tigers, who were excellent on the night, was Clifford Sayki who scored a penalty to take his total for the season to seven.
Next week both Melksham Town and Corsham Town are in Wiltshire FA County Cup action with Melksham Town at home to Swindon side KMLC from the North Division, whilst Corsham Town take on fellow Mid Wiltshire Division side VFC Devizes who sit three points behind the top two in the table having played one game less.
