There were two games this week in the Veterans’ League Cup, one in the First Round and one in the Second Round. The last of the First Round games was at New College on Tuesday night and was certainly a game to remember between Swindon Old Boys and Amesbury Junior. The two sides turned round at half-time all square at 2-2. The second 25 minutes was to see ten goals scored. With with just six minutes to go Amesbury led 6-3 but Swindon Old Boys astonishingly scored five times in those last six minutes to run out 8-6 winners. The game saw three hat-tricks, Andrew King and Charlie Knowles for Swindon Old Boys and Jon Miller for Amesbury. The other two Swindon Old Boys goals were scored by Joe Anderson and James Roberts, Ian Walker bagged a brace for Amesbury, with Gary McCuaig getting the other Amesbury goal.
The first game in the Second Round took place at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground on Wednesday night and involved the two in-form sides in the North Wiltshire Division, league leaders Redhouse and Cricklade Town. Whilst Redhouse look like they will be crowned champions they knew they were in for a tough game as Cricklade came into the match having won eight of their last nine games and were the only side to defeat Redhouse in the league this season, Cricklade winning 4-1 back in December. It certainly proved to be a tough game for Redhouse as two goals from Craig Shand and one from leading scorer Ryan Keech, with his 20th of the season, saw Cricklade win 3-0 to become the first side through to the semi final. Redhouse will look to bounce back next week when they meet Priory Vale in the title decider. Redhouse know that the title will be theirs as long as they avoid defeat by a six or more goal margin.
Next week, as well as that North Division title decider, there is another Second Round Cup fixture with an inter-divisional tie between Royal Wootton Bassett Town and FC Calne.
