There was a very limited programme of games in the Under 18 Division this week due to the World Cup with just the two games in the First Round of the League Cup and one League fixture at the top end of the table between Kintbury Rangers and Bishops Cannings scheduled. In the end a waterlogged pitch saw the league fixture postponed and then one of the cup fixtures, the game at Warminster Town where Royal Wootton Bassett Town were the visitors, was also postponed just before kick-off by the referee due to thick fog which had shrouded the pitch.
The one cup game that did go ahead was at AFC Aldermaston where Melksham Town were the visitors. An own goal and one from substitute Ryan Smith saw last season’s beaten finalists AFC Aldermaston safely through to Round Two where they will be home to Radstock Town.
There was further cup action involving one of the Under 18 sides on Sunday when Bishops Cannings met Malmesbury Victoria Youth from the North Wilts & District League in the quarter finals of the Wiltshire Youth Cup. The two sides could not be separated at the end of 90 minutes, sharing six goals as it ended 3-3 with penalty kicks required to settle matters. Despite Bishops Cannings having a chance to win the penalty shootout, a vital kick was missed and Malmesbury Vics prevailed in the shootout, winning 4-3 meaning the last side from the Under 18 Floodlit Division exited the prestigious County Cup competition. On target for Bishops Cannings in open play were Caleb Hollow with two and one for the Division’s leading scorer Jack Smith, his 11th of the season. Joining Malmesbury in the semi-finals will be FC Calne Youth and AFC Corsham Warriers with the final team set to be the winner of the Devizes Town versus Kingsdown Lions tie which is set to be played next Sunday.
Kintbury Rangers scheduled tie in the Berks & Bucks Youth Cup was postponed.
