New sides Durrington and Warminster Town both continued their perfect starts to the season with home wins this week in the Mid Wiltshire Veterans’ Division. Durrington’s 5-1 win over Calne Town was their best result of the season so far as they made it three wins out of three from their opening fixtures. The goals were shared around with Leon Collins, Craig Lewis, Lee Weeks, Jesse Walters and Gerwyn Griffiths all getting on the score sheet for Durrington, Craig Pike with the consolation goal for Calne Town.
Warminster Town are the other new side in the Mid Wiltshire Division this season and they also have a perfect record after a comfortable 9-0 win on Friday night at Weymouth Street over Amesbury Junior Badgers in what was their second game of the season. It was a good night for James Vincent who scored four of the Warminster Town goals, Louis Sparey hit a hat trick and Pete Davidson with the other two goals. That is now two wins from two games with the Warminster defence yet to concede a goal with both unblemished records likely to have their sternest tests next week when they travel to Devizes Town.
Chippenham Town sit between the two new sides in second place in the table after they continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 6-1 victory over Radstock Town at Stanley Park. Phillip Baker was the star of the show for Chippenham scoring four times with one apiece for Darren Chitty and Ryan Nicholls.
Corsham Town played their first game of the season on Tuesday night and got their season off to a winning start with a 5-1 away win at Woodmarsh against Trowbridge Town Tigers. Two goals for Ben Moore in this one, Simon Gray, Ross Hall and Nathaniel Auckland with the other Corsham goals, Duncan Boydell replying for the Tigers.
The final game in the division unfortunately did not go the full duration due to a serious injury suffered by a
Westbury United player in their game against
Devizes Town at Meadow Lane. All at the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League wish the player a speedy recovery from his injury and hopefully he will be back playing again in the not-too-distant future.
Of the five scheduled fixtures in the North Wiltshire Veterans’ Division just three were played with Blunsdon and Nomads being unable to field a side for their respective fixtures. At one point in the week it looked like Blunsdon would be pulling out of the league, but thankfully assurances made to the Club Secretary by the manager mean that they will be able to field a team in subsequent fixtures and they will try again next Tuesday night. With currently insufficient venue slots already to complete this division by the season deadline date, the two games were awarded as was advised to clubs at the AGM.
One of the three games played saw a resurgent AFC Swindon look to continue their unbeaten start to the season against one of the perennial top sides in the division, Redhouse. This was a real test of how far AFC Swindon have progressed with Redhouse having won all six of the previous meetings between the two sides. It started well for AFC Swindon with Dale Jones putting them ahead, but Dave Rendle brought Redhouse back level from the penalty spot to make it 1-1. The award of a second penalty to Redhouse ended with the same result as Redhouse secured a come from behind win against AFC to end their unbeaten start, but Redhouse certainly knew they had been made to work hard for the three points by a much-improved AFC Swindon side.
The same night Chiseldon and Royal Wootton Bassett Town, two of the sides expected to be challenging for honours, were involved in a close contest at Chiseldon Recreation Ground. In the end the home side edged it by the odd goal in five, on target for Chiseldon were Ashraf Ali, Richie Miles and Steven Wood, Nick Lye-Owens and Jeremy Newton with the Royal Wootton Bassett Town goals.
The final game of the week in the division was on Wednesday night at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground and it saw Coate and Penhill United, two sides who had won their opening games of the season up against each other. A close game was anticipated, and it proved to be just that as a solitary first half goal from Coate’s Andrew Goodchild was all that separated the two sides on the night.
