The two new sides in the Mid Wiltshire Veterans’ Division, Durrington and Warminster Town, continue to set the pace at the top of the table as both won again to maintain their 100% winning records. However, the two new sides had contrasting games.
On Monday night Durrington had a comfortable evening away against Amesbury Junior Badgers returning with all three points following a 7-1 win. Gerwyn Griffiths led the way helping himself to four goals and there were further strikes from Chris Waddilove, Craig Lewis and Ben Reilly. That made it four wins in four games for Durrington with Devizes next up this coming Monday at Bulford Camp.
Warminster Town
travelled to Nursteed Road to take on a
Devizes Town side who had lost narrowly to Melksham Town in their opening game. Warminster were looking to make it three wins on the spin after victories over Calne Town and Amesbury Junior Badgers. They were expecting their sternest test so far this season and so it proved with the only goal of the game coming three minutes from time, Gary Stanley with the goal which gave Warminster all three points and maintained their winning start to the season. David Giles was at the game with his camera and more of his excellent photos can be found on the
League Facebook Group Page.
Another side with a 100% winning record at the start of the week were last season’s runners-up Melksham Town who had a tricky looking game at the Oakfield Stadium with Corsham Town the visitors. Once again it was a close game decided by the finest of margins, the only goal of the game coming early on from the penalty spot,.Lee Morgan putting the spot kick away to give Melksham Town all three points and maintain their own perfect start to the season. Next up for them is a game away at Westbury United on Monday night, Westbury being the fourth team in the division to currently have an unblemished record.
Whilst Melksham Town and Warminster Town have won all their games so far, they still trail Chippenham Town who are another side to have made an excellent start to the season with three wins and a draw from their opening four games. Monday night saw them defeat Calne Town 2-0 at Stanley Park. Steve Tweddle, who carried on his tradition of playing for a different club each season put Chippenham ahead on 15 minutes before Darren Chitty added a second just after half time to see Chippenham sit second in the table, two points behind the leaders Durrington and a point ahead of Melksham and Warminster having played one more game.
At the other end of the table Radstock Town entertained Trowbridge Town Tigers with both sides looking to register their first win of the season. That honour goes to Radstock who ran out 2-0 winners to move above their defeated opponents in the process.
There were four games in the North Wiltshire Veterans’ Division and last season’s champions Cricklade Town finally got to play a game with AFC Swindon the visitors to the Corinium Stadium. Last season Cricklade had won 9-0 and 4-0 against AFC Swindon but it was to be a much closer contest this time round as AFC Swindon continued to demonstrate they are a much tougher proposition this season. In the end goals from last season’s top scorer TJ Bohane and James Eddy were enough to give Cricklade the three points in a 2-0 win but they had been made to work hard for those points by their much improved opponents.
Royal Wootton Bassett Town bounced back from their recent defeat at the hands of Chiseldon with a 3-1 win over Stratton Juniors. Two more goals for Jeremy Newton in this one with Steve Shaw getting the other goal for the home side, Shane Dodson replying for Stratton. The win for Royal Wootton Bassett Town saw them move into fifth spot in the table.
After failing to raise a side for their previous two games, with doubts about their continued participation, it is pleasing to report that Blunsdon returned to action this week and celebrated with their first win of the season, a 6-2 home victory over Nomads at Sutton Park. Ricky Hewitson helped himself to four goals with Nick Frost and Jamie Saunders also getting their names on the score sheet for Blunsdon, Andy Adams and Thomas Daniell with the consolation goals for Nomads.
There was a close encounter on Tuesday night at New College where Swindon Old Boys picked up their second win of the season with a narrow 2-1 success over Swindon Rovers thanks to goals from Joe Anderson and Martyn Roberts, Andrew Mark replying for Swindon Rovers. Swindon Old Boys sit level on points with Coate and Royal Wootton Bassett Town.
