Melksham Move Top in Mid Wilts,
Redhouse Lead The Way in North

Mid Wiltshire DIvision

Melksham Town returned to the top of the Mid Wiltshire Veteran’s Division, moving above Chippenham Town who were not scheduled to play until Thursday night, thanks to a 4-0 win away against Trowbridge Town Tigers at Woodmarsh. With the nights drawing in this was the last Vets game played on grass at Woodmarsh and the team will now return to Selwood Academy. Two goals from Adam Young plus one for each of Nick Ridout and Rob Cousins did the damage for Melksham as they made it five straight wins to start the season.

Joining Melksham Town on 15 points at the top of the table are Durrington who returned to winning ways after last week’s defeat against Devizes Town with a narrow 1-0 win over Winsley, Leon Collins with the all-important goal, his fourth of the season. This coming Monday sees Durrington set to host Melksham Town at Bulford Camp in a big game at the top of the table at this early stage of the season.

Chippenham Town had the chance to return to the top on Thursday when they travelled to Devizes Town. Having become the first side to defeat Durrington last week Devizes were looking to repeat the feat against another of the unbeaten sides. It was expected to be a close encounter and it proved to be just that as the two sides in the end had to settle for a point apiece after a 1-1 draw, Chris Evans scoring for Devizes Town and Ryan Nicholls replying for Chippenham Town with his second goal of the season to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

The other unbeaten side in the division, Warminster Town, were in action on Tuesday night when they travelled to Tidworth to play Amesbury Junior Badgers in a game brought forward due to pitch issues elsewhere. This was the second meeting of the season between the two sides. The first meeting had seen Warminster win comfortably, hitting nine unanswered goals with James Vincent scoring four times that night. He repeated that feat on Tuesday night with another four to take his total for the season to nine, but they were to be the only Warminster goals on the night as a much better performance from the Badgers saw a much closer game, 4-1 the final score with Barwise Baxter scoring for the Badgers.

Two sides expected to do well this season, Westbury United and Corsham Town met at Meadow Lane on Monday night and were involved in a close encounter in front of a decent crowd. It finished honours even following a 1-1 draw, Wayne Wheeler scoring for Westbury and Nathanial Auckland replying for Corsham Town.

The other game in the Division saw Radstock Town pick up their second win of the season with a 1-0 defeat of Calne Town.

North Wiltshire Division

In the North Wiltshire Division, the three unbeaten sides in the division were all in action this week and all three maintained their unbeaten start to the season with victories. Coate were made to work hard for all three points against Royal Wootton Bassett Town, with the only goal of the game coming from Pete Monks in the eighth minute in a game played at Green Lane. The win saw Coate temporarily go top of the table ahead of the week’s other fixtures.

On the subject of Green Lane, teams in the North Wiltshire Division should note that Nomads Vets have unfortunately advised that they are folding due to lack of player commitment and financial issues. What this means for the other sides in the division is that some slots will now be freed up at both New College and the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground which will reduce the number of times that it is necessary to use Green Lane in the North Wiltshire Division. Games have started to be switched and more changes will follow as time permits.

Nomads last action in the league was on Tuesday night when they fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of AFC Swindon, Jason Cobb and Olly Moore with the AFC Swindon goals. Unfortunately for the winners the game will eventually be expunged from the record books once due process has taken place regarding the withdrawal of Nomads.

Last season’s champions Cricklade Town sent a message to the rest of the division that they intend to successfully defend the title they won last spring with an impressive 7-1 defeat of Swindon Old Boys. Tom Dingle led the way helping himself to a hat-trick, Marcus Hall bagged a brace and there were further goals from Phil Corcoran and Matt Richards, Andrew King with the consolation goal for Swindon Old Boys.

The other unbeaten side are Redhouse, and they returned to the top of the table, on Wednesday night with a hard fought 3-2 victory over Swindon Rovers at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground. Wwo goals from Dave Pratt and one from Dave Rendle for Redhouse, Andrew Mark and Peter Byrne replying for the Rovers. The win left Redhouse a point clear at the top but both Coate and Cricklade Town have a game in hand over the leaders.
