Corsham Print
Wiltshire Senior League
Draw in Top Game in Mid Wilts,
Leading Sides All Win in North

The top match of the week in the Mid Wiltshire Veterans’ Division of the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League was on Monday night at the Oakfield Stadium where league leaders Melksham Town entertained Chippenham Town as two of the three unbeaten sides in the division went head-to-head. As expected, it was a close contest between two of the leading sides, Tom Robinson put Melksham ahead early in the second half but Darren Chitty equalised for Chippenham Town with ten minutes to go as the two sides could not be separated at the end of the night. So, come the end of Monday night it was as you were at the top of the division with Melksham Town a point ahead of Chippenham with a game in hand but with Warminster hot on their heels, two points behind Chippenham and three behind Melksham a gap that would be eroded if Warminster secured a win in their game on Friday night against Corsham Town.

Monday night also saw a first win of the season for Winsley, a 5-2 success over Trowbridge Town Tigers at Green Lane. There were two goals for both Adam Pugsley and Graham Griffiths with player manager Jake Gaines getting the other Winsley goal, Robert Billen and an own goal in reply for Trowbridge Town Tigers.

The other game scheduled to take place on Monday night was at Green Lane where Westbury United were set to take on Durrington but with Durrington unable to raise a side the game was the second in the Mid Wiltshire Division to be awarded, with Westbury given the win.

Tuesday night saw Calne Town pick up their second win of the season, this a 4-0 success away to Amesbury Junior Badgers at Tidworth. Goals in this one for Kyle Balloch, Tristan Garland, Paul Maddox and Craig Pike.

This season with Devizes Town playing on a Thursday night and Warminster Town on a Friday night there are games in the two Veterans’ divisions every night most weeks. On Thursday night Devizes Town entertained Radstock Town at Nursteed Road and continued their good form which now sees them unbeaten in their last four games following a 2-0 win. Last season’s top scorer Rhys Schell was amongst the goals for Devizes, the other coming courtesy of an own goal.

On Friday night unbeaten Warminster Town had the chance to move level on points at the top of the table with Melksham Town with a win against Corsham Town. However, things did not go to plan for the home side as Corsham inflicted a first defeat of the season on Warminster, Russell Lodge with the only goal of the game for Corsham in the first half firing in from distance with a stunning strike. That leaves just Melksham Town and Chippenham Town as unbeaten teams in the division.

North Wiltshire Division

With the nights now drawing in and it no longer being possible to utilise grass pitches without floodlights, there were just three games played in the North Wiltshire Veterans’ Division. There were no real surprises in any of the games with all three games resulting in victories for sides at the top end of the table. Last season’s champions Cricklade Town bounced back from their defeat against Redhouse the previous week with a 2-0 win over Swindon Rovers on Tuesday night at Cirencester thanks to goals from TJ Bohane and Godrey Chisanga to move level on points with Coate in third place in the table.

Penhill United sit one place and three points below Cricklade following a 3-0 defeat of AFC Swindon at New College on Tuesday evening. Shane Davis hit a hat-trick for Penhill, doubling his total for the season, as Penhill made it four wins from their opening five games.

On Wednesday night league leaders Redhouse were back in action and they extended their lead at the top of the table to four points with a comfortable 5-0 victory over Blunsdon at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground. There were two more goals for Dave Rendle who took his total for the campaign to seven, with further goals from Sean O’Brien, Joseph Cox and Mark Glover as Redhouse continued their unbeaten start to the season.

Next week sees the teams involved in the First Round of the Wiltshire FA Veterans' County Cup with the top match between the league leaders of the two divisions, Melksham Town and Redhouse, a game that is also a repeat of last season's League Cup final that needed penalties to decide matters at the end of last season.
