After last week’s County Cup action, this week it was the turn of the League Cup to take centre stage with five games played in the First Round and one in the Second Round. There was just the one league game played and that took place in the Mid Wiltshire Division on Monday night when Durrington entertained Warminster Town in a top end of the table clash. Warminster knew that a win would send them above Melksham Town and give them the leadership of the division and they made no mistake racking up five goals and conceding just the one. Star of the show was leading scorer James Vincent who smashed a hat-trick to take his total for the season to 13 and give his side leadership of the division. Also on target for Warminster were Louis Sparey and Carl Clarke.
There were four games scheduled in the Cup on Monday night but with Nomads having withdrawn from the league just three of the games were played with Calne receiving a bye to Round Two. It was a tight affair at Green Lane where Westbury United and Winsley, two sides now based out of Green Lane, were up against each other. At the end of normal time the two sides could not be separated, Kane Scott scoring for Westbury and Waleed Bakali replying for Winsley meaning penalties were needed to settle manners. It was Westbury who prevailed in the penalty shootout scoring three penalties to just one for Winsley to progress to Round Two where they will be home to Trowbridge Town Tigers.
Trowbridge Town Tigers made it through to Round Two with a hard fought narrow 2-1 victory over Amesbury Junior Badgers. As it is often the case with Trowbridge Clifford Sakyi was once again amongst the goals with the other coming courtesy of an own goal, Richard Taylor with the Amesbury goal.
There was another close encounter at Radstock where Mid Wiltshire Division Radstock Town entertained Chiseldon from the North Wiltshire Division. On this occasion it was the North Wiltshire Division side who came out on top, edging it by the odd goal in three. On target for Chiseldon were Dean Hughes and Ritchie Miles. Chiseldon will be home to Warminster Town in the next round.
Tuesday night saw two teams challenging for honours at the top of their respective divisions go head-to-head at Green Lane when Chippenham Town hosted Cricklade Town. Once again it was the North Wiltshire Division side who came out on top, two goals from TJ Bohane and one from Tom Dingle doing the damage in a 3-1 win, Steve Tweddle with the Chippenham Town goal. Cricklade Town will be home to Melksham Town in what looks to be the tie of the Second Round.
The same night there was a Round Two game at New College where Stratton Juniors met AFC Swindon. In a night of close games there was again just the one goal margin between the two teams come the final whistle, AFC Swindon continued their good start to the season with a 3-2 win, two goals for Olly Moore with Vince McMackin scoring two in reply for Stratton Juniors goals before a late winner from Jeremy Hope from a corner sealed the win for AFC Swindon.
On Wednesday night Royal Wootton Bassett Town had a more comfortable passage through to Round Two, winning 6-1 for the second week running, their latest success coming against Blunsdon. Steve Shaw fired a hat-trick with further goals from Steve Yeardley, Mark King and Jeremy Newton. Royal Wootton Bassett Town will be home to Mid Wiltshire Division side Corsham Town in the next round.
The final scheduled game of the week between Devizes Town and Coate fell victim to a waterlogged pitch and will now be restaged in the first week of November. The other outstanding tie between Swindon Old Boys and Swindon Rovers will be next Tuesday.
