After a week of Veteran’s County Cup action last week there were still three games to be played in the competition this week and thankfully all three games went ahead and saw Corsham Town, Melksham Town and Winsley from the Mid Wiltshire Division joining the other already qualified five teams in the last eight.
On Monday night, Melksham Town, the cup holders, were up against Warminster Town who started the night as the joint leaders of the Mid Wiltshire Division in what always looked to be the tie of the Second Round. A penalty after five minutes, which was put away by Lee Morgan, gave the cup holders an early advantage. However, it remained just that one goal until eight minutes from time, when a second for Melksham from Tom Staddon ensured Melksham’s progress to the quarter final stage for the two-time winners of the Veterans’ County Cup.
Corsham Town, the other joint leaders of the Mid Wiltshire Division, had a more comfortable passage through to the next round against fellow Mid Wiltshire Division opponents Calne Town. Two goals from Jamie Lyons plus one each for Daniel Harvey and Nathanial Auckland secured a 4-1 win for Corsham, Kyle Balloch with the Calne Town goal. Corsham Town will now be away to Melksham Town in the quarter final.
The final game of the Second Round was on Tuesday night at Green Lane where Winsley and Devizes Town, two sides from the Mid Wiltshire Division, were up against each other. Devizes Town were 1-0 up at half time but Winsley got back on level terms early in the second half thanks to an own goal. Winsley then went in front for the first time in the game thanks to a Rob Mitchell effort with what in the end turned out to be the winning goal in a tight contest between two evenly matched sides. Winsley will now be home to North Wiltshire Division side Cricklade Town in the quarter final.
The other two quarter final ties see North Wiltshire Division side Coate, currently unbeaten in all competitions this season, home to Westbury United, whilst Swindon Rovers from the North Wiltshire Division, who will be playing their first game in the cup thanks to having two byes so far, entertain Redlynch & Woodfalls from the Southampton Saturday League. Redlynch & Woodfalls are the one side playing in the County Cup from outside the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League.
With those six sides from the Mid Wiltshire Division playing County Cup games there was just the one game played in the league and it saw Trowbridge Town Tigers pick up their first three-point haul of the season with a 5-1 away success at Amesbury Junior Badgers. Player manager Tim Brown led from the front scoring twice for the Tigers, leading scorer Clifford Sakyi, Dean Peters and Kieran Prince with the other Trowbridge goals, Tom Bennett with the solitary goal for the Badgers. The win saw Tigers open up a four-point lead over their beaten opponents at the bottom end of the table.
Whilst the Mid Wiltshire Division was still focussed on the County Cup, in the North Wiltshire Division it was just league games this week with three games played. On Tuesday night both Cricklade Town and Coate kept their league title challenges on track. Cricklade Town secured a narrow 2-1 win over Royal Wootton Bassett Town, Godfrey Chisanga and Adam Smith on target for Cricklade and Peter Wilson with the reply for the Royal Wootton Bassett. The win for Cricklade saw them move to within three points of leaders Redhouse.
Coate had a more comfortable evening scoring four times against AFC Swindon through Pete Monks, Andrew Goodchild, Paul Stonehouse and Thomas Steptoe in a 4-1 win. They remain six points behind Cricklade but with three games in hand on both the top two sides would go joint top with Redhouse if they win those games in hand.
The final game of the week saw Penhill United consolidate their fourth place in the table with a 2-0 win over Swindon Old Boys. On target for Penhill were Lee Hollamby and Chris Angell. Next week focus switches to the League Cup with five inter-divisional ties set to take place starting with three games on Monday night.
