  Cup Domination Continues

Last week saw the first games played in the Quarter Final of the Wiltshire FA's Veterans County Cup. Unfortunately the Melksham Town v Corsham Town tie was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and the two sides will try again this coming Monday.

Two games did go ahead with the first one on Monday night at Green Lane where Coate from the North Wiltshire Division, unbeaten all season in all competitions, took on Westbury United from the Mid Wiltshire Division. In a tight contest a solitary goal from Pete Monks was all that separated the two sides as Coate maintained that unbeaten record and booked their place in the semi-final in their first season in the Veterans' category.

Joining them in that semi-final will be Southampton League side Redlynch & Woodfalls, the only side from outside the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League in the competition. Redlynch & Woodfalls made it through to the last four thanks to a 2-0 win over North Wiltshire Division side Swindon Rovers on Tuesday night, Roger Burton and Jesse Walters with their goals. North Wiltshire Division side Cricklade Town will join them in the semi-final after they were awarded their quarter final tie after Winsley folded their veterans' side due to player availability issues. The fourth semi-finalists will be the winner of that Melksham v Corsham tie.

There was also one game played in the League Cup this week and it saw the continued domination of this season's competition by teams from the North Wiltshire Division as Chiseldon secured a narrow 1-0 win over Warminster Town from the Mid Wiltshire Division at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground on Wednesday night. Once again Chiseldon had leading scorer Richie Miles to thank for the goal that sees them through to the Quarter Final where they will be away to the winner of the Westbury United and Trowbridge Tigers Second Round tie.

Two league games were also played this week, one in each of the two divisions. In the North Wiltshire Division there was a big game at the bottom end of the table between Blunsdon and Stratton Juniors who were both looking to secure their first win of the season. After a close encounter that honour went to Stratton Juniors after a 1-0 win, the all important goal coming from leading scorer Vince McMackin. Blunsdon pushed hard for an equaliser but the Stratton defence dug deep to secure that first victory of the season and move off the bottom of the table.

In the Mid Wiltshire Division the one league game played saw Devizes Town consoliate their fifth place position and close the gap to the top four sides with a 3-0 win over Calne Town at MOD Lyneham. Rhys Schell set them on their way with the opening goal in the fifth minute and it remained just the one at the end of the first half. Schell then doubled Devizes' lead midway through the second half before a third from Rob Mitchell eight minutes from time made sure of the points for Devizes who moved to within two points of fourth placed Chippenham Town with two games in hand.
