Vets' Round-up
Westbury & Coate into Cup Semi,
Cricklade Close in on Leaders

There were three games played in the Veterans’ League Cup this week, the one outstanding Second Round game and two of the four quarter final ties. The other two quarter final ties are scheduled to take place next week.

The one outstanding game from the Second Round was an inter-divisional affair between Durrington and Redhouse which was played at Green Lane on Tuesday night. Last season’s beaten finalists Redhouse kept their quest to appear in a second consecutive cup League Cup final on track with a convincing 6-0 win. There were three more goals for the North Wiltshire Division’s leading scorer David Pratt, who took his total for the season to 20 in the process, Sean O’Brien bagged a brace and Mark Glover with the other goal. Redhouse will now play AFC Swindon in the quarter final at the Gerard Buxton Ground this coming Wednesday.

The first of the quarter final ties was on Monday night at Green Lane and it was once again an inter-divisional tie between Westbury United from the Mid Wiltshire Division and Chiseldon from the North Wiltshire Division. On this occasion it was the side from the Mid Wiltshire Division who secured their passage into the semi-final with a 3-0 win thanks to goals from Paul Beavers, Peter Ayton and an eighth of the season from Dale Rowland.

Joining Westbury United in the semi-final will be Coate after a 2-1 win over Penhill United in an all-North Division affair at New College. The two league games between the two sides had both been close run affairs decided by a single goal on both occasions, Coate winning both games. It was another close-run thing in the third encounter between the two sides, once again won by Coate, although Penhill United did find the net on this occasion, Shane Hibbert with their goal. However, goals from Andrew Goodchild and Neil Snow ensured Coate maintained their unbeaten run in all competitions which now extends to 13 games, or 14 if you include the expunged game against Nomads earlier in the season.

The final quarter final tie will be this coming Tuesday when Cricklade Town from the North Wiltshire Division host Mid Wiltshire Division league leaders Corsham Town at Cirencester Town.

As well as the cup games there were two league games in both of the divisions. On Monday night in the Mid Wiltshire Division at MOD Lyneham, Calne Town and Trowbridge Tigers shared the points following a 1-1 draw, Mark Dolman with his first of the season for Calne and a fifth of the seasonfrom leading scorer Clifford Sakyi in reply for the Tigers. The point for Trowbridge saw them move above Radstock Town in the table on goal difference.

The following night at Tidworth Chippenham Town returned home with all three points following a 2-0 win over Amesbury Junior Badgers, both goals coming through James Weston. The win for Chippenham saw them climb above both Durrington and Devizes Town in the league table, although Devizes have four games in hand over the other two sides and are just three points behind Chippenham.

In the North Wiltshire Division, Cricklade Town picked up another three points in their quest to defend the title they won last season with a 5-0 win over AFC Swindon to move to within four points of leaders Redhouse with a game in hand.   There were two more goals for TJ Bohane, who took his total for the season to 15 in the process, with the other goals coming through Phil Corcoran, Adam Smith and Dean Wilson.

The final game of the week was on Wednesday night at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground between Royal Wootton Bassett Town and Swindon Rovers. In a storming first half Swindon Rovers scored three times to go into the break three goals to the good. Peter Byrne opened the scoring before Sean Lewis doubled the lead midway through the half. A third from Tim Hughes a minute before half time put Rovers well and truly in command. Whilst Royal Wootton Bassett Town upped their game in the second half scoring twice through Steve Shaw and Stephen Yeardley, the damage had been done in the first half and they were unable to find a third as Swindon Rovers picked up a fourth win of the season to move above their beaten opponents in the table.
