There was a massive game at Cirencester Town FC at the top of the North Wiltshire Veterans’ Division of the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League on Tuesday night where unbeaten Coate met Cricklade Town who had lost just once all season, that defeat coming at the hands of league leaders Redhouse. When the two sides had met for the first time back in October it had finished 0-0 and another tight game was anticipated, and it proved to be just that. Coate went in front on 18 minutes when a poor defensive clearance fell to Pete Sealey on the left-hand side of the 18-yard box and his low shot on the half-volley flew into the far bottom corner of the net to make it 1-0 to Coate. Cricklade were back on level terms before the break though. TJ Bohane drew a foul on the edge of the box and took responsibility for the resulting free kick himself, firing a left foot shot into the top corner of the net giving the Coate keeper no chance to level matters up at one apiece. Bohane went close again with another free kick from just outside the box in the second half but this time his effort went just the wrong side of the post. Marcus Hall then when close for Cricklade but was denied by the Coate keeper. Cricklade went in front for the first time in the game when a dangerous free kick into the six-yard box from Mike Solan was turned into his own net by a Coate defender with Bohane ready to pounce if the defender had not got to the ball. A flag from the club assistant was overruled by the referee and the goal was allowed to stand. Coate thought they had equalised in similar circumstances when a dangerous free kick into the box saw the ball flicked on and bundled into the net by Thomas Steptoe at the far post, who had got the wrong side of Marcus Hall, but he had gone too early and this time the referee agreed with the club assistant referee’s flag for offside. There was to be no further goals as Cricklade held out for a 2-1 win to move six points ahead of their beaten opponents, although Coate, who have now lost their unbeaten tag, have two games in hand. All of the top three sides have now dropped four points. Cricklade have the slightly easier run-in with just Redhouse to play of the other two title challengers, with Redhouse and Coate yet to play each other this season, with the teams also set to meet in the League Cup semi-final. The other game played in the North Wiltshire Division this week saw Penhill United and Swindon Rovers both fail to find the net and had to settle for a point apiece following their 0-0 draw. The point for Penhill saw them draw level on points with Coate but Coate have four games in hand over them.
The scheduled game between Swindon Old Boys and league leaders Redhouse was postponed with Swindon Old Boys unable to raise a side. After Coate's defeat, Redhouse are now the only unbeaten side in the league and have dropped the least number of points. However, their title hopes have been dealt something of a blow this week after leading scorer Dave Pratt, who has scored half their goals this season, became ineligible to take any further part in the Vets League this season after playing for Highworth Town in the Hellenic Premier League in midweek.
There were also just two games played in the Mid Wiltshire Division this week. Both games were on Monday night. At the Oakfield Stadium Melksham Town entertained Radstock Town and four goals from Kris Beasley helped Melksham to a 5-2 win, Ian Dowell with the other Melksham goal. The win for Melksham saw them move above Warminster Town, whose scheduled game against Chippenham Town was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Melksham now sit second in the table three points behind leaders Corsham Town with a game in hand.
The second game this week was at Green Lane, Devizes where Westbury United hosted Devizes Town. Devizes were looking to close the gap to the top three with a win but had to settle for just the one point after the two sides fought out a 1-1 draw, Rhys Schell with the Devizes goal and Westbury’s coming courtesy of an own goal. The point means Devizes now sit seven points behind Warminster with both teams now having reached the half-way stage with their fixtures. David Giles was there with his camera and his excellent pictures from this game can be viewed on the League Facebook Page.
