Premier Division

Normally there are no games in the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League between Christmas and New Year but in a break from tradition, with an 18 team Premier Division, a couple of league games and one Fountain Trophies Cup tie were scheduled for this Saturday. Unfortunately, on Saturday morning there was still standing water in the goalmouths at Southbrook Rec which meant the cup game between Kingsdown and Down Ampney was postponed. As this was the second attempt to stage this tie it will now switch to being a Down Ampney home game when it is rescheduled.

There was no danger that the league game between Larkhall Athletic Development  and Trowbridge Town would be postponed due to a waterlogged pitch given the new 3G surface at Plain Ham. Both teams had started the season with promotion aspirations, but both find themselves in the bottom half of the league table with half the season gone, with Larkhall in trouble in the relegation zone at the bottom of the table. Both sides desperately needed a win to end the calendar year on a high to set themselves up for better things in the New Year. It was to be the visitors Trowbridge who got themselves off to a tremendous start, Charlie Maddison finding Ben Wickens inside the box, with Wickens firing into the top corner of the net with just a minute on the clock. Four minutes later Maddison then went close himself, firing in a shot from distance that went just over the bar. Trowbridge continued to make the early running and Maddison went close again two minutes later, captain Jamie Lyons feeding the ball into him and Maddison hitting another powerful shot which this time was saved by the Larkhall keeper. Trowbridge continued to dominate the early stages and had a golden chance to extend their lead when Ben Wickens squared the ball across the face of the goal but unfortunately for the visitors nobody was following up to take advantage. Larkhall gradually started to get themselves a foothold in the game and created several chances but were unable to find away through the resolute Trowbridge defence. It was the visitors who went close to scoring the second goal of the game when the pacy Wickens was put through on goal but, despite slipping, the young Larkhall keeper recovered his composure to pull off an excellent save to deny the visitors a second goal. Trowbridge would not be denied for long though, two minutes before the break Owen Pearce setting up Jamie Jordan who ran into the box and calmly slotted home for 2-0 to Trowbridge.

Five minutes into the second half, Larkhall went close to pulling one back, the home side being denied by an excellent save from Rob Brown who was back in the Trowbridge starting line up after his recent time abroad. At the other end Trowbridge continued to create chances to extend their lead, Maddison firing wide of the target on 55 minutes after good set up play from Wickens. George Bendle then had a couple of chances, his first saw him beat a couple of defenders before shooting tamely and the shot was easily saved and then seeing a shot on the turn brilliantly palmed away by the Larkhall keeper.  As in the first half Larkhall upped their game and started to put the Trowbridge goal under immense pressure with Brown twice pulling off saves to deny the home side, Larkhall also hitting the bar and seeing a shot cleared off the line as they sought to get themselves back in the game. In the end Brown and his defence held out as Trowbridge registered their first clean sheet in the league since mid-September to claim all three points with a 2-0 win.

The other game staged on Saturday was the local derby game at Shrivenham where near neighbours Faringdon Town were the visitors. When the two sides had met at Faringdon back in October a crowd had 250 had witnessed a close encounter as Faringdon Town officially opened their new floodlights. There was another three-figure crowd in the return fixture at Shrivenham on Saturday and once again the crowd were to witness another tight contest in a typical local derby encounter. The game was to ultimately end without a goal for either side due to a combination of some excellent saves from the two goalkeepers, Jack Gibson for Faringdon and Lewis Fox for Shrivenham, and some wayward shooting when players were through on goal. Shrivenham were to end the game with just ten men after Alfie Barker was sent off for a foul on the edge of the box when the Faringdon player got beyond the Shrivenham defence and was clear on goal. Despite the numerical disadvantage Shrivenham saw out the closing stages without conceding to extend their unbeaten run to ten games.
