Club History
The Blunsdon United Years
An adult men’s football club, Blunsdon United, existed in the early 1900s. After the end of the First World War the club were playing in the Vale of White Horse (VWH) League along with the likes of Fairford Town and Wootton Bassett Town and they are known to have finished as runners-up in the VWH League in Season 1921-22. As well as playing in the VWH League the early 1930s saw Blunsdon United playing in both the Swindon & District and Cirencester & District Leagues.
The period just after the end of the of the Second World War saw Blunsdon United back playing in the Cirencester & District League and Season 1949-50 was to be a good one for the club as they won the Cirencester & District League Division 1 title. After winning the Cirencester & District League they moved across to the expanding Swindon & District League, which was now operating with six divisions. Season 1953-54 saw Blunsdon United win the Swindon & District Leagues’ Junior Cup a feat they repeated again in Season 1962-63. They made the final once again the following season but this time round they were beaten in the final by Southbrook United.
By Season 1967-68 Blunsdon United had climbed through the divisions and reached the Premier Division but dropped back down to Division 1 before returning to the Premier Division after winning the Swindon & District League title in Season 1973-74. The same season saw them reach the final of the Swindon & District League Advertiser Cup for the first time, narrowly losing 2-1 to Calne North Star in the final. Season 1974-75 saw them finish in third place in the Premier Division.
Season 1979-80 once again saw Blunsdon United make the final of the Advertiser Cup but once again they fell just short, losing to Dolphin Hotel in the final. Blunsdon United continued in the Premier Division of the Swindon & District League and after another good season in 1980-81 the decision was made to move up to the Wiltshire County League ahead of Season 1981-82. Their first season in the higher league saw Blunsdon finishing as runners-up achieving immediate promotion to Division 3 of the County League. Blunsdon initially found the step up difficult and after twice finishing in the bottom three were relegated back to Division 4, although it was only to be for one season.
Their one season back in Division 4 in Season 1984-85 was a successful one as they once again finished as runners-up but this time rather than take promotion to the top Junior Division they moved up to Senior status and Division 2 of the County League, also being eligible to enter the Wiltshire Senior Cup for the first time. Blunsdon United were to spend three seasons at Senior level and in all three seasons, fired by the goals of John Angliss who scored over 50 goals in those three seasons, they achieved a top half of the table finish each time. Their best position was a fourth-place finish in Season 1986-87 but they did reach the semi-final of the League’s Senior Cup.
Season 1988-89 saw them drop back down to Junior status and a third-place finish in Division 4 saw them promoted to Division 3 where they were to remain for the next seven seasons, their highest position in that period being a couple of seventh place finishes. They temporarily left the Wiltshire League at the end of Season 1995-96 after a difficult season that had seen them finish second from bottom.
Blunsdon United returned to what is now the Wiltshire Senior League after a season’s absence following a merger with Swindon & District side John O’Flynn FC who were run by Jock Elliott who became secretary of the merged club. A third-place finish in Division 4 in their first season back saw them form part of the new Intermediate Division for the following season, a new category created by the Wiltshire FA between Junior and Senior status for Season 1998-99. Blunsdon United were to initially be very successful at this new level finishing sixth, fourth and then twice being league runners-up. They also made the final of the Intermediate Cup in Season 2000-01, losing to Wanborough in the final. However, the final season at this level saw just nine teams competing with Blunsdon finishing bottom of the pile and the experiment with Intermediate status was abandoned the following season. Blunsdon United were to spend the next six seasons in Wiltshire League Junior Division 1 spending all six seasons in the bottom half of the table, including a second to last position in the last of those six seasons.
Between Seasons 1985-86 and 1987-88 and then again between Seasons 1998-99 and Season 2008-09 Blunsdon United also had a reserve side in the Wiltshire League.
Blunsdon United Fold, Reformation as Blunsdon FC At the end of the 2008-09 Season sadly Blunsdon United folded both their two adult sides for several reasons and the village were without an adult team for four seasons until in 2013 Dwayne Fisher approached Blunsdon Colts, the youth team set up which had been formed in 1998, about restarting the adult team. Under the guidance of then Chairman Ian Dowdell, Fisher got the adult side back up and running and the whole club was rebranded as Blunsdon FC as we know them today.
After reforming Blunsdon adults had a short spell in Division 1 of the Wiltshire Football League in 2013-14 but struggled finishing bottom of the league winning just one of their 24 games. They then left and joined the Cirencester & District League in 2014. Blunsdon played for four seasons in the Cirencester & District League, winning Division 2 of that league in Season 2016-17. They also picked up the Cirencester Junior Charities Cup in the same season. The following season (Season 2017-18) they were in the top division finishing a respectable seventh place in a division of fifteen teams.
The following season in 2018 they joined in the Swindon and District League and were immediately successful winning Division 1 of the Swindon & District League in their first season, winning 17 of their 18 league games, as well as reaching the semi-finals in both the Advertiser and the Wilts FA Junior Cup. The league success saw them promoted to the Premier Division of the Swindon & District League.
Blunsdon were to have three successful seasons in the Premier Division of the Swindon & District League although unfortunately two were curtailed due to Covid-19. In Season 2019-20 they had won eight of their eleven league games at the time the season was brought to a premature end and the following season they had lost just once in their opening seven games before the league season was once again brought to an early end. The league were, however, able to conclude a cup competition when the season was restarted. With Blunsdon United having lost twice in Advertiser Cup finals, Blunsdon FC achieved what their predecessors were unable to do by winning what was now the Your Sport Swindon Cup in Season 2020-21, defeating The Globe 4-0 in the final.
Season 2021-22 was an incredibly successful season for Blunsdon as they went unbeaten in their sixteen league games, winning fifteen of them to take the league title finishing six points clear of runners-up Nine Elms and a massive eighteen point ahead of the third placed side in a division dominated by the top two teams. The league title success entitled them to promotion under the Feeder League arrangements between the Swindon & District League and the Wiltshire Senior League and Season 2022-23 saw them back in the Wiltshire Senior League for the first time since Season 2013-14 and playing in the Premier Division of the Senior League for the first time in their history. They will also play in the Wiltshire Senior Cup, Season 1987-88 being the last time a side from Blunsdon entered that prestigious competition.
It was to be an excellent first season for Blunsdon in the Premier Division as they achieved a top five finish following promotion from the Swindon & District League. They were involved in the battle for third spot involving also Pewsey Vale, Wroughton, Frome Collegians and Kintbury Rangers which went all the way to the closing weeks of the season. In the end it was Pewsey who would secure that third-place finish, with Frome Collegians just one point behind Pewsey and Blunsdon one point further back.
Whilst not quite reaching the heights of that first season, Blunsdon's second season saw them finish just below half way but just three points below sixth spot and are now an established outfit at this level.
