Once again two Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League sides will be taking part in the Faringdon Thursday Memorial Cup Competition. League champions Wroughton will again be taking part looking to win the cup for the fifth time whilst Cricklade Town have also entered this season and will be looking to win the cup for the first time. The competition starts in pre-season with the semi-final and final then being played at the end of the season.
The competition dates back to 1951 but the roots of the Competition can be traced back to 1936 when shopkeepers and their assistants had a midweek afternoon break (i.e. early closing on a Thursday). In a field along Church Path in Faringdon they met up for a kickabout which soon led to the establishment of a team. The team entered the Oxfordshire Thursday League and also played in the Faringdon Hospital Cup. During the team's short history, until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, they played on three different pitches in Faringdon. When the old team players returned from the war duty they found some things had changed. The Town did not stop on a Thursday afternoon as before and the players that remained were no longer in their playing prime.
With some £30 remaining in the Bank from the old Thursday Team the 'old players' discussed how best to provide a memorial to six old Comrades who fell in the war and the 'Faringdon Thursday Memorial Cup' was born.
More details on the interesting history of the competition can be found on the official site for the competition at www.freewebs.com/faringdonthursdaymcc/
