Club History
Letcombe F.C. are a football club based near Wantage in Letcombe, England. The earliest recorded mention of a football club at Letcombe Regis shows that the village team played in the Wantage section of the North Berks League in 1910-11. They won this section in 1912-13 and then drew 1-1 with Radley, the Abingdon Division champions, to share the trophy.
Letcombe remained in the North Berks League without much success until the Club was wound up in the fifties. Members of the village reformed the Club in 1961, but it was in the eighties that the Club started to taste success. They were champions of Division 2 of the North Berks League in Season 1984-85 gaining promotion to Division 1, losing just one game all season. They won the North Berks Cup in 1988, beating Saxton Rovers 1-0 in the final. They then won Division One of the North Berks League in 1989-90, going through the entire 22 match programme unbeaten. The War Memorial Cup (for players under 23) and A G Kingham Cup (for reserve teams) were won in the same season, and the Club joined the Chiltonian League as part of the FA pyramid system.
Letcombe won Division One of this League in their first season and finished fourth in the Premier Division the following year. They successfully applied to join the Hellenic League in 1993. With a very young side, the Club struggled for the first few years, but then began to reap the rewards of their youth policy. With a number of youngsters moving to other areas, 2001-2 was another testing time for the Club, but new young talent saw a better season in 2002-3. The following season was their most successful ever, with the Club securing second place in Division One East, but were denied promotion because of lack of floodlights.
At the end of the 2006 season manager Matt Goddard stepped down after three successful years at the helm. The highlight being the runners up finish in the Hellenic Division One East League in 2003-2004. After the resignation of Goddard from the managers post, the club looked within and appointed Kevin Bailey as first team manager. Kevin immediately called upon good friend and life long Letcombe player Brian Monnery to assist him.
Letcombe again changed their first team management for the 2007-2008 season with the previous seasons reserve team manager and Letcombe FC legend Des Williams taking over the responsibility of the first team. He was able to guide the squad to a 3rd place finish in a very tight league and felt agrieved that they didn't walk away with the league title; Kevin Bailey returned to manage the reserve team. The 2008-09 season saw Des joined by Alan Gifford as assistant manager.
When Des stepped down as manager after two seasons Alan took over the reins, in a role reversal. A seventh place finish in his first season was the teams highest finish in his four season tenure. After two season when the side finihsed bottom of the table he stepped down. Things started to pick up for the club again when Garry Cook took over the managers position. A much improved season saw Letcombe finish seventh in his first season but the reorganisation of the National League System at the end of the season saw Letcombe forced to leave Hellenic League Division One due to the lack of floodlights now needed to play at Step 6. The club opted to return to the North Berks League, joining Division 3, and they immediately took the league title losing just one game all season. Rather than remain in the North Berks League they opted to rejoin the Hellenic League, playing in one of the regional Division Two's that primarily catered for reserve sides. Season 2019-20 saw them in the West Division and they were top of the table when the season was brought to a premature close due to Covid having won ten of their opening 13 league games. They were going well again in Season 2020-21 when once again the season was brought to an early end by Covid, having lost just one of their opening five league games. After two disrupted seasons Garry Cook was to remain in charge for one more season, achieving a ninth place finish in Hellenic League Division 2 South.
The past two seasons have seen Luke Stone in the manager position at Letcombe and it has co-incided with another successful period for the club. Season 2022-23 saw them finish as runners-up to Swindon Supermarine Development in Hellenic League Division 2 South. Last season, whilst up against the most of the same teams, the division was rebranded as the Central DIvision with Letcombe going one better and finishing as champions of the division, losing just two games all season and finishing an impressive ten points clear of runners-up Headington Amateurs. The title success also entitled the club to take promotion to the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League under the pyramid agreement established between the Wiltshire Senior League and Hellenic League.
Letcombe have a reputation for giving youngsters a chance with a number of 16 and 17 year old players always on their books. The key to the Club's future is keeping them together for a number of years. They are an ambitious club who are keen to return to the Hellenic League at Step 6 with plans for floodlights in progress which would enable elevation from the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League. Expect them to be challenging for honours in Season 2024-25 in what is shaping up to be a very competitive division with a number of clubs looking to move up to Step 6.
