Club History
The exact origins of Ludgershall Sports are not documented but it seems that in 1918 two existing village teams merged, to form Ludgershall Sports Football Club. The club’s headquarters were in the back bar of the Prince of Wales Hotel in the town and those who were too young to go in the bar waited on the pavement outside to see if they had been picked.  The Wilts FA's records showed that a Ludgershall club existed in 1900 and that is taken as the official formation date.

The first secretary of note was Fred Elliot, whose grandson, grandson-in-law, and great grandson were all to play for the club from the 1960s onwards. Like most clubs there were ups and downs; one of the high points was in the late 1920s and early 1930s when the club won the Morrison Cup, the Faber Cup, but most importantly the prestigious Wiltshire Junior Cup in Season 1930-31 defeating Melksham Town Reserves in the final, having been beaten finalists the season before. They were also runners up in the Salisbury League around this time. In the mid 1930’s the club purchased the main parcel of ground on which they still play their games today.

Another successful Ludgershall Sports team came about in the late 1950s and early 1960s, partly following one of the club’s local rivals, Kangaroo Sports, folding. Season 1962-63 saw the club win the Wiltshire Junior Cup for the second time and the following season they joined Wiltshire League Division 1, finishing in third place in their first season at this level. Their stay in the Wiltshire league was to be short lived and it seems they returned to the Andover & District League.

Ludgershall were to return to the Wiltshire League for the first season of what is now the current Wiltshire Senior League, playing in Division 2 in Season 1976-77. Once again it was to be a short stay as, after finishing second from bottom they pulled out of the league. Up until the early 1990’s Ludgershall played in the Andover & District and North Hampshire Leagues and other than noting a third-place finish in the North Hampshire League in Season 1988-89, it has not been possible so far to trace their record over this period. By season 1991-92 they were back in the Andover & District League, but that season was to herald another period of success for the club under the management of Steve Winstone. They finished champions of the Andover & District in Season 1991-92 to gain promotion back to the North Hampshire League. A second consecutive championship, losing just once as they took the title, saw them elevated to the Hampshire County League Division 3 for the start of Season 1993-94. Mike Walsh took over as manager for their venture into the Hampshire County League and they won the Division 3 title at the first attempt to make it three consecutive title winning seasons.

The next three seasons were spent in Division 2 of the Hampshire County League but Ludgershall found it a lot tougher going and after a 12th place finish in Season 1994-95 they dropped a few more places in the following two seasons. A further season of struggle in Season 1997-98 saw them pull out of the Hampshire League part way through the season and their record was expunged from the table. They restarted again the following season back in the Andover & District League.

In 2000-01, the club once again won the Andover & District League and progressed back to the North Hants Senior League, where promotion once again to the Hampshire League was achieved after finishing as runners-up.  Two seasons were spent in the Hampshire League before an expansion of the Wessex League in Season 2003-4 saw Ludgershall elevated to the new Division 3 of the Wessex League. Ludgershall’s stay in the Wessex was to last just one season. After finishing in 18th spot, uncertainties surrounding the required ground improvements saw Ludgershall return to the Hampshire League. Ludgershall remained in the Hampshire League for four seasons, their highest position being 9th in their first season back at this level.

In 2009 they dropped back down into the Andover and District League which they once again won leading to them into re-joining the Wiltshire League in Season 2010-11, some 33 years after they were last in the Wiltshire Senior League. A successful first season saw them finish runners-up to FC Sanford and promoted to the Premier Division, they also went close in the League’s Junior Cup losing 3-0 in the final to Intel. They have remained in the Premier Division of the Wiltshire Senior League ever since until the end of Season 2021-22 with their best finish being 4th place in Season 2014-15. They also made the Senior Cup Final, again going down 3-0, this time to Melksham Town Reserves.

The two Covid impacted seasons saw Ludgershall Sports win just one game in each season and the period of struggle continued in Season 2021-22 when Ludgershall Sports won just four games all season and finished seven points below Marlborough Town who were in 15th place. Season 2022-23 saw them look to regroup after a period of struggle in the newly formed Division One and it was to be a successful season for the club as they bounced back at the first attempt, finishing in third spot behind Larkhall Athletic Development and Kingsdown to secure an immediate return to the Premier Division.

Ludgershall's return to the Premier Division in Season 2023-24 was not to be a happy return as the side struggled at the wrong end of the table all season finishing bottom of the table winning just three games and finishing 17 points adrift from safety. They saved their best form for the Fountain Trophies Cup, reaching the quarter final stage of the league cup competition. They will look to rebuild in Division One and are expected to have a much better season in 2024-25.
