Club History
Whilst there is evidence of a football club in Shrewton at the start of the 20th Century the current Shrewton United Football Club were formed in 1946 just after the Second World War. That first season in 1946-47 was to be a successful one as they made it through to the final of the Wiltshire Junior Cup although they lost to Corsham Town in the final.  They again made the final in Season 1950-51 but unfortunately with the same outcome as they lost to Sherston on this occasion. They joined the Wiltshire League in Season 1952-53 when its Division 2 was split into a North West and a South East Division. That first season at this level saw Shrewton playing in the South East Division and they finished as runners-up, finishing just one point behind champions Devizes Town Reserves. The following season saw the Wiltshire league establish a Reserve Team Division with Shrewton playing in a now combined Second Division without the reserve sides. Another good season in Season 1954-55 saw Shrewton finish in 5th place, level on points with 3rd placed Frogwell and only eight points adrift of champions Box Rovers. However, this was to be their last season in the Wiltshire League for a number of years as they returned to District League football.

The formation of the Wiltshire County League (what is now the Wiltshire Senior League) in Season 1976-77 saw Shrewton return to a county wide league, the club joining what was Junior Division A for that first season of the league. Shrewton had a good season finishing in third place behind Walcot Boys Athletic and Park YC Res. However, it could have been so much better as they led the league for much of the season only to fade badly at the end. Having finished at the top end of Division A, Shrewton found themselves in the top Junior Division for Season 1977-78 and embarked on a period of great success. Their first season in the newly named Division 3 saw them crowned champions finishing three points clear of runners-up Sanford Reserves. They repeated the feat in Season 1978-79 as they ended the decade with back to back championships. In a dramatic and hectic end to the season, due to a backlog of fixtures they were forced to play 15 league and cup games in the space of 25 days but came with a tremendous burst which enabled them to pip Vickers Res by one point. They again made the Wiltshire Junior Cup final but suffered defeat for the third time as they narrowly lost 1-0 to Walcroft in the final.

They went close to making it a hat-trick of titles in Season 1979-80 but were this time runners-up behind Sanford Reserves. Shrewton did, however, have the consolation of lifting the Wiltshire Junior Cup for the first time, defeating Meadowcroft in the final in what was their penultimate season as a Junior club. Having gone so close to achieving a hat-trick of titles, they bounced back the following season to achieve that third title success in Season 1980-81. On top of this they secured Senior Status and moved up to Division 2 of the league.

A fourth place in their first season at the higher level could not be matched in the next six seasons but a third-place finish in Season 1988-89 saw them elevated to the top division of the league for the very first time. Shrewton adapted to life in the top tier very quickly, finishing in fifth place in their first season, going on to take runners-up spot in Season 1990-91 behind champions and local rivals Amesbury. A second runners-up finish in Season 1992-93 showed that Shrewton had firmly established themselves as one of the leading sides in the county. They wouldn’t have to wait too long for that first top division title and that came in Season 1996-97 as they finished one point ahead of Corsham Town. The following season they lifted the League Senior cup for the first time defeating Cricklade Town 5-0 in the final. The same two sides made it to the final the following season and this time it was a tighter affair but Shrewton held onto the cup as they edged it 2-1. Back in the league they finished up as runners-up in both season’s 1998-99 and 2000-01. The latter season also saw them make it through to the final of the Wiltshire Senior Cup for the one and only time in their history but unfortunately they lost 2-0 in the final to Wootton Bassett Town.

This was however the precursor to their two greatest seasons in the Wiltshire League as they achieved the double of league champions and cup winners in both Season 2001-02 and Season 2002-03, finishing 14 points and 10 points clear of their nearest rivals in the respective seasons. Following their third title success, after extensive work on improving their ground, they were successful in achieving promotion to the Western League where they were to remain for ten seasons. During that period in the Western League Division One their best finish was a fourth place in Season 2007-08 with striker Dean Foot scoring an impressive 38 goals during the season. However, after finishing second from bottom in Season 2012-13 they returned to the Wiltshire League Premier Division where they have remained since.

In the first six seasons following their return to the league they failed to finish in the top four on just one occasion and, whilst not adding to their three title successes, finished runners-up twice in Season 2015-16 and Season 2016-17. They also made the League Senior Cup Final once more, losing 3-1 in the final to Wroughton in 2016-17.

After a third place league finish in Season 2018-19 they were once again going well in Season 2019-20 when Covid unfortunately brought the campaign to an early end with Shrewton sat in second place in the table. Season 2020-21 was also to end early but this time round Shrewton were not going so well and sat in ninth place when the action was ended early for the second consecutive season. Season 2021-22 finally saw football return to some form of normality and the league season was completed but for Shrewton, by their own high standards, it was not a successful one, with a points deduction for playing an ineligible player resulting in them finishing in 12th spot, their lowest place finish since they returned to the league.

Shrewton had a very tough opening half to the season in Season 2022-23 under the management  of Shrewton legend Jesse Walters. Whilst they had no problem scoring goals at the right end, their problem was shipping goals at the other end and they were to end the season having conceded a 100 goals, only the second time in their history in the league that they had shipped a three figure number in a season. After issues with raising a side saw them forced to fold their second side there was to be a massive uptick in fortunes in the second half of the season which was eventually to see them secure their Premier Division status for Season 2023-24 with a 13th place finish.

Whilst Shrewton United were to again finish in 13th place in Season 2023-24 it was a much less stressful season with Shrewton only slipping down the table to that 13th place finish right at the end of the season as the teams around them caught up with their fixtures. Shrewton finished a comfortable 13 points clear of the bottom two positions and their safety was never really in doubt. With a new manager coming on board for Season 2024-25 in the shape of former player George Plank they will be hopeful of climbing the table.
